GBP room safe

What is going on with the mandatory safe charge? I have never heard of being forced to rent a safe, normally it is an option. Is this actually going on and if so sounds like a money grab.

There is a safe in every room. If you do not require a safe, you are not obligated.

When you check-in, advise them that you do not need the key and lock for the safe which you will have to sign for anyways.

It is a cash cow for the hotel, no doubt. Most people will pay for the peace of mind which I'm sure the hotel is well aware of.
