Yes, as a newbie you will enjoy plenty of snorkeling at the Bahia in clear, calm water. Go north towards the pier, past the Bahia and try snorkeling there as well. Further north, just on the other side of the iron shore, is Akumal Bay. We won't be getting there until April 20.

hi there..you can snorkel right at the hotel beach..There is lots of fish to see but you can also go to the Akumal beach about 10 min by taxi..as you are new to this it should probably keep you happy..I don't snorkel myself but our friends did everyday right at the beach..make sure you take your own gear as it's more hygienic..sorry we won't be there till May but make sure you get Jose at the Coba beach bar to make you a 'crazy b*tch'.. for men it's a 'speedo remover'..lol..he's awesome and has a great sense of humour..tell him 'Doug & Judy ' sent you..

Agree that bringing your own gear is the way to go. Akumal bay is a must do , even if you don't want to snorkel. You can get a guide there , or go on your own. Recommend a vest at akumal , the water is shallow , but the stuff you want to see is way out there. There are also giant sea turtles very close in to the beach. Just past Akumal beach is Yal Ku lagoon which is also pretty cool , and not crowded. I enjoyed snorkeling at Chemuyil bay , which is a short walk around the corner of the beach at the bahia. There are no other people there , so go with friends , and use a life vest or some other backup floatation device for safety. If walking out in the sandy bottom , drag your feet , you wouldn't want to step on a ray. Snorkel equipment can be bought pretty inexpensively at Wal mart in Playa Del Carmen.
