That site doesn't work.

Mexico isn't a war zone. I see no need to register with the gov't to let 'em know I'll be away.

It is suggested to leave a copy of your passports, your travel itinerary and such with someone back at home. Typically this would be someone who would want to contact you in case of emergency - this would probably be the same person who contacts the government in case of emergency and they would have all that information anyway.

That being said, when we went to the DR last year I registered us, it's no big deal. The information is then passed on to the local Canadian authorities who then know you are there should unexpected trouble arise (tsunami, hurricane, earthquake, war, etc.).

It's true that by scanning our passports "they" know where you're travelling to but they don't know where you're staying or have any contact info for you.

I'll admit, I rarely bother registering but I can't see that it hurts anything and may well come in useful in the event of an emergency.
