Snorkeling

We stayed at ABR this past April and really like the reefs and turtles but it was really windy while we were there out of our 11 days only 3 were good for snorkeling. Other guest said Cozumel is as good and being on the west side you don't have that wind problem does anyone know a good resort in Cozumel that has snorkeling from the beach like ABR ?

Personally we have had better snorkeling in Akumal. All we saw in Cozumel where the ever present silver colored fish off the beach. Even when we took a snorkeling tour, didnt see much. I think Cozumel is more suited for scuba. Also had much more to look at when we went out on boat snorkeling near Puerto Morelos.

jwilbourn65 I read your review on Akumal Bay and you didn't see any reefs the reefs are south of the area that the turtles are at right in front of the Akumal Beach Resort

We never saw reef at Akumal Bay. Didnt go out very far. Just enough to see turtles. There was coral off shore from Oasis, where we stayed.

The snorkeling is better in Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay than in Cozumel. There is very little coral or structure near shore in Cozumel. The diving is great in Cozumel. It can be windy in Cozumel also. We were there in early March this year and the wind blew hard most of the time from the north, west, and south. The harbor was closed for two days. It is usually more windy in the Spring than in the Summer. Summer is actually a great time to go to Akumal. There is usually less wind and the turtles are nesting. There are many more turtles in the Bay in summer and there is a good chance that you could see a female laying her eggs or the baby turtles emerging from the nest (both usually at night).

From ABR, the reef is straight out about 100 yards. There are coral heads between the reef and the shore. The best place to see turtles is down in front of the dive shop (north end of Akumal Bay) in areas that have turtle grass. It is best to get out early (before 9 or 10 AM) before the big snorkeling tour groups arrive. The big groups are usually loud, thrash around a lot, and scare the turtles. If you move slowly and quietly, you can get very close to the turtles and get some great pictures.

Alas, so you didn't see the sunken cannons, and so much more

The turtle grass area (where the turtles are) make up 1/10 of the bay

You are correct Vancouver. We only stayed about an hour. First night at Oasis i miss stepped out onto the patio and tore up my knee pretty well. Couldn't handle much more than an hour. We will return this year and try our hand at using the collectivo from Palladium and spend more time exploring.

just returned

Saw lots of new coral growth in some of the areas, but alas there are many snorkel tours / buses

That said, there is good snorkeling at Palladium, Barceló, Grand Sirenis

It wasnt bad. Lots of rock. Only issues is that it can get very shallow in areas and lots of urchin. There is a reef that breaks near shore. Didnt make it out there since i was limited to about 15 minutes at a time due to injury. Definitely a good place for casual snorkeling and close to Akumal Bay if you are up to a hike.
