Half Moon Bay is not as protected by an outside reef as Akumal Bay so when the wind blows, best not to swim or snorkel in the centre of the bay - there can be a strong current there at this time. Best to wear a snorkel vest

The north end of the bay is more protected, shallow

South end not much there for snorkeling

While the beach is sandy north of La Buena Vida , entrance into the water is rocky. Thus I wear water shoes

When I was there in late November, we had no wind so I swam/snorkeled every day

To pile on, the "beach" is definitely rocky and hard on feet. I've sat at LBV and watched many a tenderfoot dance their way out. What a hoot. I've done it myself.

I've snorkeled from that area off LBV but once. The wife didn't care for it much because she felt a little claustrophobic with the reef and rock. It takes a bit of skill out there it seems, also.
