I've asked this question of the Playa area

Why do people come to this area? Is this area like Playa del Carmen? Is there a town close? Are the resorts in this area under the same rules/standards about noise and how many floors it can have?

I know next to nothing about Mexico and looking for an AI. What's the appeal of this area over the PDC area?

Thanks.

I saw this question in the Akumal Forum - So I hope this is the area you are referring to.

Akumal is much more intimate than PDC. If you want nightclubs and the like you will want to spend some time in PDC. If you want more quiet sand in-between your toes beach bars, then Akumal is the best! Akumal is a great place to find a reasonably priced condos. Great for families - Beaches are quiet and less crowded, you will snorkel with sea turtles and rays any time you like. Snorkeling is not good in PDC. Not that I don't like the beaches in PDC - Cause I do. But after spending time at both I would not hesitate to go back to Akumal.

Yes, sorry my message was misleading. Yes, I want to know why people pick Akumal over PDC or any other area.

From the quick research I've done, it seems that the only difference is the snorkeling. And I'm a snorkeler. So this area may be the area for me, more so then the clubs.

Thanks.

Hi Snuckles!

Last year, we returned to Mexico for the first time in 25 years! Went to Acapulco a few times in the 70's and Cancun in early 80's. We stayed (last year) a few days in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Akumal so we'd know which we liked best for the next trip. Trouble was, we enjoyed them all! Of the 3, I liked Cancun the least and we had liked Playa del carmen the best, so we went back there again the end of summer last year. This year (last month), we stayed in a condo in Playa for 6 nights and a villa in Akumal for 5 nights and loved both! I am being more drawn to Akumal the more I go there. Don't know what it is about it?! Here's what I like about each--

Playa~~gorgeous beaches in Playacar and north Playa, excellent restaurants, fun shopping. This is not a party town like Cancun. People who go there just for the day to shop will say how crowded it is, BUT when you stay there, you'll find that it really isn't. Mornings are great, the beaches have plenty of room , and we've never had to wait to get in a restaurant.

Akumal~~Excellent snorkeling in Yalku,Half Moon Bay, and Akumal Bay. Sandy entry for swimming just in Akumal Bay--or Akumal Sur and Aventuras Akumal if you stay there. Very good restaurants, though only about 6 of them. Food prices here a a little higher than in Playa. Not a lot of shops, but some very nice ones.

Akumal is VERY laid back, and small, so if it is your first time down there, I would recommend staying in Playa and going to Akumal for a day trip to check it out, or splitting your time between the two. When we were in Akumal this year, we did drive up to Playa a few nights because there isn't anything to do in Akumal after about 9:00.

We didn't go to Playa to party, we went for dinner and to Walmart one night!

Do check out Locogringo.com as they are specialists in the Akumal area.

Wow, thanks Summer. I think we're set on Akumal. We're going to relax and snorkel. If snorkeling wasn't so important to us we'd probably stay in Playa Del Carmen.

The only problem with Akumal, there isn't really any 4 or 5 star hotels. We're interested in a true 4 or 5* because we're looking to spend some time in our room and would love some great amenities.

The Grand Sirenis is the only 5* but there haven't been any reviews on it as of yet. So if the Grand Sirenis turns out to be a flop we'll probably stay in Playa.

I really can't bring myself to stay at ABR. I know it's the BEST for snorkeling but the 3* scares me a little. Makes me a little worried about the room and the food.

The problem is to tell what a true 4 or 5 star hotel really is. Few 5 star hotels exist in Mexico and the only ones in the area are the Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott in Cancun. The other hotels are self rated by either tour operators or wholesalers and have no set standards so can be very unreliable.

Hi Snuckles!

I think I replied to your post about ABR on Locogringo, too. I love the folks on Locogringo, but do not share the tremendous love for ABR. I REALLY didn't like it at all. Definitely try Akumal though--even if just for a day or two. When we first went there, it was a little strange feeling because it's just so small and laid back. Yet, after going back, it just began to grow on us and I'm beginning to feel "at home" instead of leery of it. I had to chuckle when going to Lucy's. I expected a little restaurant, but it's this tiny (about 8x12 ft.) stand where you order at a window. It's very good, though!

I see you were reading the Grand Sirenis thread. I REALLY would not take a chance on that resort yet. Are you looking for an AI? That's pretty much what all of the resorts in Playa and Akumal area are. Cancun has very nice resorts that aren't AI, but I like Playa and Akumal better. If you don't find anything near Akumal, be sure to check the resorts in Playacar. Playacar is a an upscale, gated dommunity adjacent to Playa del Carmen. Playacar beach is gorgeous and there are several very nice AI's on it. We stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico and loved it. Royal Hideaway is excellent, but mucho $$. I really like staying in Playacar if we go AI and renting a car for a few days to go to Akumal, Tulum, etc. It's very easy to drive from Playacar to Akumal--about 30 min. drive.

After trying AI's, small hotels in Playa, a condo, and a villa, we probably won't do AI's much any more. Casa Redonda in Akumal was SOOO cool, but was $275/night, which is too pricey for a long stay for us. Most of the villas will rent for less than a week on LG. If it's your first time to this area, an AI would probably be best. Feel free to PM me on LG if you have any questions. Sorry, I seemed to have rambled a bit here!
