Places to buy provisions in Eskdale?

Hi All

Mrs Maximus and I will be staying in a part of the lakes we've not stayed in before this summer, namely Boot, in Eskdale. Thoroughly looking forward to it!

As usual, we'll be self catering. Just wondering what there is around there, or within not too long a drive, for places to stock up on provisions. Supermarkets? Bakers? Butchers? Village stores?

Many thanks for any suggestions

NM

Eskdale Green has a small village store. Further on, slightly larger store in Gosforth. Further still, Egremont has a Coop and a few independent stores.

If you need a large supermarket, you need to drive to Whitehaven which has a large Morrissons and Tesco.

We arranged a Tesco delivery the times we've stayed. Eskdale Green stores fine for the rest.

You could also call in at Booths in Ulverston on the way there. Only a couple of miles out of your way if you're coming in via the A590.

There is a cracking bakery in Gosforth, just looks like someones house. Fantastic range of home made pies, and very popular with the Sellafield crew, so get in early! :)

HI N.M.

Gills Bakery in Gosforth +1 , great pies etc

Try to get the real Cumberland Sausage at a good local butcher, buy it by the yard not per/lb!

If you are out and about, these are just no nonsense local vernacular pubs, bit hit and miss but that's part of the joy of travel

leuca, I love Cumberland sausage! Buying it by the yard sounds like my kind of shopping experience.

Any idea where to look for a butcher who sells it like that?

Thanks also for the pub suggestions. I rather suspect they'll come in handy.

Nautius,

This is the place for your Cumberland Sausage:

Also if you are anywhere near Grange over Sands, Higginsons is a fine emporium of all things meaty. They do great pies and sausage.

Enjoy!

Well, after all that, we never actually did go and seek out butchers selling Cumberland sausage by the yard. But happily, for the best of reasons. Shopping forays were a plan we thought we'd save for a rainy day, and while the weather was good we thought we'd rather spend the time getting out and walking in the lovely scenery.

And guess what? We had lovely weather all week! Went for some cracking walks, but didn't have the time left over to go on shopping trips. Between the village stores in Eskdale Green and eating out at the excellent Woolpack Inn, which happily was just a stone's throw from where we were staying, we had enough to keep us going.

Having had almost continuous rain on my last couple of trips to the Lake District, this was all a bit of a treat!
