Haverigg is a stones throw from Millom, Millom itself is not the prettiest of towns. However, from Haverigg there is the village of Silecroft ( where I live) with a wonderful beach and village pub ( The Miners Arms). Also there is Blackcombe which is a wonderful hike to the top and the views are magnificent. There is also Murthwaite horse riding in Silecroft too. The nearest lake is Coniston and try the Lemon Drizzle at the Bluebird Cafe on its bank. A short drive through the Wicham valley and over the Dutton Bridge you will find the lovely village of Broughton. The Broughton Bakery is a great place to have breakfast and start your day on the way to Coniston ( you almost have to pass the village to get to Coniston). Or on the way back the Black Cock Inn is worth a visit for a beer of food.

If you're interested in natural history or industrial history, walk around the RSPB reserve at Hodbarrow, which occupies the former Hodbarrow Iron Mine - there is a good bird hide, an old iron lighthouse, and a circular walk along the sea wall which takes 2-3 hours depending on the pace, but it's easy underfoot. The railway lines north and south pass through some pretty spectacular scenery and there are cheap day tickets; if you go up the track to Ravenglass you can get on the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway and Ravenglass is worth a potter around (but the beach is a bit muddy). South takes you along the coast to destinations such as Carnforth ('Brief Encounters' railway station, interesting exhibition) and Lancaster (good for a rainy day). There's also an interesting Folk Museum in Millom.
