Melbourne, Derbyshire.

We're 4 pensioners staying in Melbourne for a week. Two are visitors from Calgary, Alberta. Is there anything in particular we should see or do in the area? I know Elvaston Castle Gardens are on the doorstep, but anything else?

Will you be driving there? Calke Abbey is very difficult without your own transport

If Calke Abbey is not far away then Biddulph Grange must also be in 'striking' distance....

Sorry EssexWanderer - Biddulph Grange is near Stoke on Trent so nowhere near Melbourne (Calke Abbey is about a 15 minute drive from Melbourne).

However, an obvious place to visit is Melbourne Hall - see http://www.melbournehall.com .

Since you have a car, I would recommend a the 4 mile or so trip to Breedon-on-the-Hill church, high on a hill and visible from miles around. Superb views when you get there. There's a garden centre with tea rooms and shops the Ashby side of Breedon village.
