If you need any help at all, the volunteer Thirsk Tourist Information centre in the market square is there to help you
Good to know. For anyone who doesnt know it there are TICs in most towns around the country who have a vast array of information on where to visit and where to stay ,timetables and the like to make your holiday more pleasurable. However it is often better to find accommodation via the internet as accommodation owners are charged a percentage on bookings and eventually this can be passed on to the buyer..
Thank you for your reply.
In the case of Thirsk Tourist information, anyone who visits the website can view the accommodation registered with them. There is a link straight through to the owners own website,so a booking can be made direct with them, no charge is made by the tourist office.
It is true that if a tourist walks into the office and is helped to find a bed for the night, that 10% of the cost of the first night is paid to the tourist office by the accommodation provider. This cost is in no way passed on to the tourist. The cost to them for that room is exactly the same as if they had gone to the accommodation directly.
Thirsk tourist Information is a totally voluntary not for profit organisation. The accommodation providers, choose to sign up for two reasons. The first is because they want tourists arriving in the town to be able to find them. The second is that Thirsk Tourist Information is run by volunteers who have to raise every penny to keep the service open, seven days a week in the summer and six in the winter. The businesses want the tourist office to be there,so they choose to support it by advertising, or signing up to the accommodation scheme.
