Family experience for friend who is termially ill :(

Hello,

I have a friend who is part of our online Mom's group, she is quite ill, and not expected to be with us much longer. She is Mom to two little ones (5 and 2yo). Our Mom's group has gathered funds, and is trying to find a special family outing or experience they can enjoy together. We are open to a wide range of ideas and costs, but it would need to be local to Columbus, and not require much physical exhertion. Our biggest issue is none of us are local to her, and having a hard time finding ideas.

Any suggestions or ideas, big or small would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks!

I think a trip to The Wilds would be fun and memorable. I'm not sure if they have tours all of the time though, or if it wouldn't be until May

Is she mobile? Healthy enough to walk around? Can she drive?

Some more details might help us get other ideas gathered for you.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Hi,

Thanks for your response! The wilds looks great. Yes, she can drive- her husband would be included in this also, so he would be able to as well. She is able to walk, just probably not for extended periods. I'm hoping that will still be the case come May. I glanced at the wilds website- it looks great, off to look into it more. Thanks for the input!

BTW- we have just under $1000 to spend, so cost isn't too much of factor in the ideas.

Thanks again!-Eris

Yes I too second The Wilds. What a great idea. Something else to consider is I think they offer overnight accommodations in yurts and you can get a 4 star meal in the park.

Focusing on activities to do with the kids, a trip to Cincinnati could be superb with many options.

The Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal includes the Duke Energy Children's Museum, likely the best children's museum in the state. The Museum of Natural History and Science there also would appeal to young kids with its Ice Age and cave tours, both of which are well done and manageable walks (I think there are stairs in the cave tour, if I remember correctly) and extremely kid friendly. Union Terminal itself is a spectacular space for kids.

Columbus has one of the best zoos in the U.S., with a heavy emphasis on exhibits to appeal to young kids, but the Cincinnati Zoo often is very highly rated as well and very kid friendly. Uniquely, the Cincinnati Zoo also is a botanical garden which should be beautiful in spring.

Cincinnati has pedestrian bridges across the Ohio River. The Newport Aquarium across the river in Kentucky is the best aquarium close to Columbus.

Another possible Cincinnati activity is an Ohio River boat tour.

There is much more to do in Cincinnati for kids than at the Wilds, which takes a greater sophistication as the animals sometimes are viewed at a great distance or are not visible due to the high grasses in the preserve. Binoculars are needed at the Wilds IMO, and these are tricky with kids. If they do visit the Wilds, be certain that they visit Tom's Ice Cream in nearby Zanesville.

Best of luck in fulfilling your very noble undertaking!

I will "third" The Wilds. My husband and I went with my in-laws and nieces and nephews last summer - it was a very memorable experience.

I would also recommend the Columbus Zoo, as another reviewer suggested. The zoo is really nice, and in my opinion one of the best around.

When is the trip scheduled? The Columbus Clippers have a new stadium at Huntington Park, and we've always had a great time! They have some games during the day as well....usually about 1 a month starting very soon actually. They also have games during the week in the evenings and on the weekends as well.

Columbus also is home to a lot of metro parks that are picnic worthy.

Whatever you choose, I hope you all have a wonderful time together!

A fun way to announce your gift could be with a gift of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams Macaroons + ice cream.

http://jenisicecreams.com/buy-macaroon.html

They are really good ice creams and the macaroons are colorful and fun. i think it would be pretty fun for a child to get to eat one, and they seem old enough that they would probably really enjoy it. It would also be a fun surprise to get in the mail. ;)

What you are offering to do for your friend is wonderfully nice and I hope everything works out!

do you happen to know if your friend has gotten any family photos taken?

I've known quite a few people who have gotten family and baby pictures done by Britt Lakin and they have turned out really nice.

I think getting to have really beautiful photos of your mom and your family together would be really great too. and something the kids would really appreciate later on.

and i think professional family photos is something that people often wait on doing.

and maybe she would even go to the wilds and take pictures of the family doing that together.

This is a great amusment park for preschoolers. It is in Pennsylvania.

I agree paying for photos to be taken would be a precious gift for her family.

Another idea is Kalahari in Sandusky. It is a resort with the largest indoor waterpark in the country.

Also there are some nice bed and breakfasts in Amish country and amish farms to visit with buggy rides. For another idea.

I had another idea. Not sure how long you can put this off but I've heard several people rave about Lakeside Ohio, very family friendly.

My kids always loved the Columbus zoo, too. It's also a very beautiful place to be. There is an amusement/water park next to it. I would check more recent reports as I haven't been there in about a decade, but I used to take my daughter there when she was 2. They had a section devoted to small kids but was designed so that even adults could get involved. And there was a lazy river.

In addition to pictures, what about videos of this trip?
