Is Southend airport a good alternative to Stansted?

We normally fly to Alicante from Stansted with Easyjet, for some reason the flights in June have not been released from Stansted yet.

Flights have been released from Southend and we are considering this as an option.

Distance wise there is not much difference in travel to either airports, would appreciate any advice from members to help us decide

Many thanks,

Jean.

Thanks for your replies, we have booked Southend and are looking forward to the experience.

Stansted flights to Alicante have still not been released so would have been waiting a long time to get sorted.

Southend airport is really small, which means getting through it is really quick. Getting form the short stay car-park to the departure gate can be as little as 10 minutes, depending on number of people.

When we landed last saturday, there were four people at border control, not bad for one aeroplane!! We were through to the car park from the aircraft in only seven minutes (no luggage).

That is the good part. There are two draw backs we have found with Southend, The first is the traffic. If you get the timing wrong you could be in a traffic jam. We did just that, we travelled bank holiday Monday and the weather was great, it brought out the crowds and we sat in a traffic jam for one and a half hours.

The second problem is the Meet and Greet. We have used Maple Manor twice. Twice they have let us down, both times with the same excuse - Short staffed. All they need are drivers, can't be hard to recruit.

The first time we were "greeted" by a mini-bus and it took intotal about half an hour to get our car, because they were waiting to fill the bus.

This time no mini-bus and no car. They told us it would be there in ten minutes it took 35, not on, late at night freezing cold!

Good point about the traffic jams, hadn't really thought about it although always allow plenty of time, I would be panicking if one and.a half hours stuck in traffic.

We intend to get there at 8am for 10.20am departure so hopefully there won't be too much traffic about.

We have booked airport car parking, although next time may book the airport hotel, will check it out when we are there.

There is a small branch of Moneycorp just inside the terminal entrance for foreign exchange. WH Smith airside and a Stobarts shop selling the usual perfume and gifts plus a cafe/snack bar. That's all!

If you're anywhere along the Liverpool Street to Norwich train line, and if your flight is at a "normal" time (or you're happy to stay overnight)... then I wouldn't bother with driving. It's an easy train journey, change at Shenfield (I did it a couple of days ago)
