Suggestions and recommendations for North Devon in June 2013

We( 3 x south africans) will be staying at Venford near Dulverton for 6 days prior to participating in the UK 70.3 Iron Man which is held at Wimbleball Lake on the 16th June 2013. We would like to do some sight seeing and visiting a few local pubs and restaurants as well as doing a trip to the coastline. Small quaint seaside villages................any recommendations please, as there seem to be so many. In terms of food destinations, any recommendations would be appreciated.

For the coast/villages try Lynton & Lynmouh, Porlock, Watchet. In land a bit Dunster may suit in the quaint stakes (it is very near the marshy coast but not "seaside").

For food the Rising Sun in Lynmouth is not bad, the Tarr Steps inn is nice too and the Black Venus is often recommended to me.

Park at the Crown at Exford (ask first), then walk up to Dunkery Beacon, there are various routes so you don't have to do the same there and back. Late lunch/ early supper in the Crown.

I have given details on your other post on the Devon forum.........Dulverton is in Somerset though. Wise to remember as some people get touchy - friendly rivalry between the counties ;-)

Good luck in the Iron man

Woods in Dulverton is one of my favourite pub/restaurants and had a good meal at the Quarrymans Rest in Bampton recently too.

We ate in the aforementioned Crown at Exford last week, up to the usual excellent standard.

I can second the Crown. Their Sunday lunches are good and if we ever see summer again in this country it is lovely sitting out by the river and eating.

You will find lots of villages in West Somerset (Dulverton - Minehead - Porlock) with excellent tea rooms/gardens that do delicious home cooked food at very reasonable prices. Pubs too are good places to eat.
