Where to stay in Cradle Mountain Region

Hi, we will be arriving in Launceston & planning to stay for 3 nights in the Cradle mountain region before heading south to Hobart. We are looking at doing some bushwalks in the Cradle mountain, St Clair Lake and possibly Walls of Jerusaleum National Park before driving to Hobart. We are hoping to stay at one place for all the 3 nights and would like to seek some advice where would be a more central place to stay without too much driving during these 3 days. Would it make sense to stay in Sheffield or Deloraine? Or do you think it would make more sense for us to stay closer to Cradle Valley when we are visiting Cradle mountain and move to Deloraine/ Sheffield when we visit St Clair Lake/ Walls of Jerusaleum National Park?

Appreciate some advice. Thanks!

The best place to stay is Cradle Mountain. A place must have an address in Cradle Mountain Road to be at Cradle Mountain.

There are places further afield at Moina and Sheffield, but it's quite a long drive to Cradle Mountain (30 to 50 minutes).

Deloraine is nearly 2 hours away.

Note also that Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park is huge - about 2.5 times bigger than Singapore. You cannot visit the Lake St Clair end easily from the Cradle Mountain end. It's about a four hour drive or a six day walk between the two. So, the Walls of Jerusalem are reasonably close to Cradle Mountain, but you'd need to stay at Derwent Bridge, or be driving from Queenstown to New Norfolk, to visit Lake St Clair.

To give you a feel for the distances involved, Tasmania is about 100 times bigger than Singapore. And the roads off the main A1 highway are generally very winding. Average road speeds of about 60kph are useful for planning. There's a downloadable map here: https:/…Tasmania.pdf
