Planning 2 night trip to Freycinet area

As part of my 10 day trip round Tasmania in December, I am planning to spend 2 nights in the Cape Freycinet area. On looking at accomodation - there seems to be a large range (in prices) depending on where you stay. To get the most out of the area, I have been told to stay within the reserve which then limits the choice to a handful (all with prices around the $300 a night mark). Also all tours/excursions seem to be exhorbitantly priced. There are 2 of us travelling and would appreciate any advice on whether it is worth it to spend the extra $$ to stay at one of the places in the reserve or rent one of the homestay chalets/bungalows. Is it wise to do the walks, treks etc on our own vs joining a tour and is spending the money doing a boat trip worthwhile?

I'd like to get the most of our experience and willing to pay the bucks but only if it really is all that special. (Reviewed Saffires but the price is way out of my budget!) Any recommendations / advice is much appreciated!

The only accommodation in the National Park and Conservation area is owned by Federal Hotels. Coincidentally, they also own a 20 year monopoly on poker machines and a sizeable portion of everything else in Tasmania.

I think you'd be better off looking at the accommodation in Coles Bay, Bicheno and Swansea.

You don't need to sign up for "excursions" with Federal Hotels either.

Freycinet Sea Charters with Rastus the dolphin-finding dog is good. The Freycinet paddle is also good. You need to pay for a parks pass, but otherwise the walks are free and easily self-guided. Info here: http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/?base=3363

I have replied to a couple of other questions today on the Tasmania forums about Freycinet and there's some useful information there.

Thank you so much for your help. This is exactly what I needed to know.

Any recommendations for decent accomodation in the Bicheno or Coles Bay area?

They're pretty much all listed - along with reviews - on these two pages. Also click the "Other Accommodation" and "Holiday Rentals" buttons under property type on these pages:

We a re going to splurge at Freycinet. Cannot decide between Edge of the Bay and Freycinet Lodge.

Is location and scenery similar?

Edge of the Bay- no breakfast but can self cater- $30 credit for dinner as part of the price of the room- "forces" you to eat at the restaurant- seems smaller and less resorty- which we like

The Lodge- breakfast included and not obligated to eat dinner

Can't make up my mind- Aren't we lucky to have such a "problem".

As I've been doing some research on where to stay as well......Freycinet Lodge seems to have ideal views and is a great spot. Also they do have some interesting packages (www.puretasmania.com)i.e. if your budget allows. But apparently other than the view, the place itself has very mixed reviews. I have been highly recommended to take the wineglass bay cruise (www.wineglassbaycruises.com) and tried booking on the web to reserve places but it came up with no availability. However, emailed them direct and they managed to get me 2 places for the date I required. So good luck and I am sure you will have a great time. We are definitely looking forward to our trip!

I'd try Freycinet Haven. It's right next door to the park and is really lovely
