Strahan to Hobart

Hi we are heading to Tasmania for Christmas, we are heading to Cradle Mountain from Launceston for XMAS, do you think it would be best to go from Cradle Mountain to Strahan stay overnight then drive to Hobart, then we were going to stay in Hobart and then drive back up along the coast to Launceston. Or would you recommend doing another way? My Mum mentioned the drive through the middle from HObart to Launceston is beautiful but we really want to be in CRadle mountain for XMAS so thought might be using doing the above way? Thoughts?? We have just under 2 weeks

The reason that one should go to Strahan is to spend some time there to do the Gordon River cruise and the Wilderness Railway (which is supposed to re-open on December). Otherwise, it's just a long way around, with expensive accommodation, to boot.

Save yourself a couple of hours on the road and go down the Midland (Heritage) Highway. http://www.heritagehighway.com.au/

Thanks for replying so quickly, so would you recommend going from CRadle Mountain to Strahan then towards Hobart? Just thinking it might save time doing it this way instead of going to and from Strahan from Hobart? When we depart Hobart heading back to Launceston along the coast are you able to recommend the best places to stay along the way as we want to take a few days?

No, it won't save time. It's a couple of hours longer. The only reason to go via Strahan is if you have an extra day or two up your sleeve to do the Gordon River cruise and the Wilderness Railway.

On the way back north via the coast, go via Richmond and port Arthur and stay a day or so on the Tasman Peninsula. Things to do here: http://www.tasmanregion.com.au/

Then head north along the coast through Swansea, Bicheno and St Helens, staying as long as you want along the way. Freycinet National Park and the Bay of Fires are popular stops. The penguins at Bicheno are also good.

Head from St Helens to Launceston via Scottsdale. Plenty to see along the way there too: http://www.northeasttasmania.com.au/

The lavender will also be in flower at Nabowla: http://bridestowelavender.com.au/pub/

Hi Luigi sorry to ask more but you are a great help i have been reading alot of your answers to other posts. AS we will be travelling from Cradle Mountain to Strahan on 27th Dec doesnt look like the afternoon cruises begin until the 29th would you still go to Strahan for a look around or mainly need to get on a boat? I wont be able to do the speed boat as ill be 6 months pregnant. Also you mentioned when heading back to HObart to go the Midland highway would we stil get to see the derwent bridge and the wall in the wilderness?

If you are not going to spend a day doing the river cruise at Strahan, don't go to Hobart via Strahan.

Head eastward out of Cradle Mountain to the A1 Highway and then south to Hobart that way.

No, the Wall in the Wilderness is not on the Midland Highway.

Clearly you have your heart set on going via Strahan. That's OK, but make it worthwhile. You have plenty of time up your sleeve, Devote a bit of it to doing the Gordon River cruise and the Wilderness Railway trip - out of Strahan if it's operating there by then; otherwise out of Queenstown.

But DON"T just drive that way thinking it's a brilliant idea and that it'll save you time. It isn't and it won't.
