Columbus Pier?

We're going to put in bay this weekend and thought about taking the ferry to Sandusky during the day for something to do. Can anyone tell me about the area where the ferry drops you off? I read somewhere it was called the Columbus Pier. Does it have restaurants, shops, etc., anything like that, right there when we get off worth exploring? Any links to a website listing what's there? Thanks!

hmmm... well, that would be a fun way to get to sandusky. the Jet Express is the only ferry that services PiB to Sandusky, and it makes a stop at Kelley's Island as well, so you could always explore Kelleys for the day instead of coming all the way to Sandusky. Kelleys has a lot to offer... the glacial groove, inscription rock, the state park... brewery and winery...very neat little island.

The area where the ferry docks in Sandusky is called the Jackson Street pier. The pier itself is pretty much a big parking lot. you'll have to walk a few blocks to enjoy what downtown has to offer. Walk east along Shoreline Drive to get to Shoreline Park... walk out along the breakwall and view the boats going in and out of the Yacht club. There is a little place that sells the best fresh walleye and perch sandwiches right before Shoreline Park... you can't miss it, no indoor seating, but several tables outside. Go for a snack or for lunch. Walk a little further to the east and (pass the yacht club) and you will see Damons on the water, it's the chain rib restaurant, but the atmosphere is great. Good for lunch, dinner or drinks. Next to Damons is Battery Park (open space and boat ramp). Just south of Battery Park is the Sandusky Maritime Museum (on Meigs St).

Go back the way you Columbus Ave instead of east along Shoreline, You can do lunch at The Lunchbox on Columbus Ave. Walk further up Columbus Ave 2 blocks and walk through the pretty parks and gardens. At the west end of the Washington parks there is the Merry-go-round museum... nominal entry fee, but a beautiful carousel inside with a lot of displays (Jackson St @ Washington Ave). Columbus Ave, Market St, Washington, Wayne St...are all lined with different shops. Sailor Sales is a cute little shop on Water st that i like to visit (but i think you can access a back entrance from Shoreline Dr as well).

Check out a Mapquest map of downtown sandusky, and it will help you.

If you're really ambitious, you can walk to the Follett House museum in the 400 block of Wayne St. beautiful Greek Revival style house built in the early 19th century... now a part of the Sandusky Library system, but home to some neat displays, including the Confederate Prison on Johnsons Island (island you can see accross the bay from teh pier)....admission is free.

basically, if you want to fill your day in downtown Sandusky without a car, then expect to do some walking. There is nothing right exactly at the Jackson St pier, you have to walk east or south to see what the city has to offer.
