Flying to Bend - best airport?

Hi - we want to get to Bend, fly to Portland & then what is the easiest airport to get to the area? Suggestions? Planning a 2012 trip in the fall.

Redmond is the Bend area airport. Bend has an airport but not one you would fly into.

Here's the info on the Bend-Redmond airpport. You have a limited selection of airlines that serve the airport (and they aren't all daily). Your other choices for airports in Oregon are Eugene, Medford and Portland, with PDX often being a lot less expensive. It pays to compare costs, incuding car rental. A couple hundred dollars difference in air fares might convince you to fly into Portland and rent a car. You'll want a car in Bend anyway. It'll give you a chance to see some of our beautiful state enroute.

The airport code is RDM. It's a pretty small airport. Services and staff are all pretty good though. Depending on what time of year could be a beautiful drive over the mountains from Portland though... it's always pretty but the fall colors might be nice to see.

We always fly to PDX because of the difference in Airfare. If times are bad stay in Salem the first night. In the Fall, I would definitely not travel the mountains at night. The colors in the day are just to great to miss.

The nearest commercial-airline airport to Bend is in Redmond, which is a separate city; the airport code is RDM. RDM is about a 20-minute drive south on Highway 97 from Bend, depending on where you are staying in Bend.

The drive from PDX (Portland's commercial-airline airport) to Bend takes about three hours. There can be snow and ice on the road in late fall (i.e., November and December).

If you are stopping in Portland anyway, then renting a car in Portland and driving to Bend will likely be cheaper than flying from Portland to Bend, depending on airfares and how many people are traveling. And, as the poster above mentioned, you'll want a car in Bend, anyway.

Does that help? Feel free to post follow-up questions if any of the info isn't clear. Many of us in Bend make the drive to Portland multiple times a year and also alternate flying into RDM or PDX depending on airfares and time of year.

Portland is going to be your best place to fly into. The extra cost of going to a small air port can be made up in your rental car.

This discussion keeps repeating itself...and no answer is right all the time.

We currently have reservations for three trips...to the east coast out of Seattle (Delta), to San Jose out of PDX (Southwest) and to Phoenix out of Eugene (Alaska). In each case, we took advantage of "specials" being offered. It's the same with flying to Bend, Eugene or Medford. If you're diligent and keep up on the specials with websites like airfarewatchdog.com, you can often get the deal you want.

If you have to go "right now" jonahan D's blanket endorsement of PDX carries some truth...maybe.

Although we haven't heard back from the OP, his/her plans were for next fall, so maybe he/she is still keeping up with this thread and watching for specials.
