Bend in July

Hello! We will be going to Bend at the end of July. We're super excited and want to make the most of our trip. This will be our first time there. We have 2 girls, 13 and 10, and want to make it as fun as possible for them. Any suggestions on what to do while we're there?

Check out the TripAdvisor list of top attractions. Certainly, the High Desert Museum, Newberry National Volcanic Monument and Lava Lands would be on your list. And, if you all like to hike or bike there are lots of great trails, waterfalls and kayaking/rafting opportunities in Deschutes National Forest.

There is SO much to do in the Bend area! White water rafting, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, High Desert Museum, Lava Butte, the Lava Tube, Benham Falls, Paulina Plunge, bike riding, hiking, and swimming. Those are just off the top of my head;)

Yes. All of those.

Also: float the river in town, learn to standup paddle, "climb" Pilot Butte then eat Pilot Butte burgers (and frings!), explore shops downtown and in the Old Mill, ride bikes everywhere, go on the Big Eddy rafting trip, eat ice cream at Goody's, go to the farmer's market, visit Smith Rock, and... (I could just keep going!)

Keep an eye on the event calendars for Visit Bend and Central Oregon Visitor's Association. Always a ton going on that time of year...

These are all great suggestions. We love High Desert Museum. The Inn of the 7th raft trips down the Deschutes through Big Eddy is a short but fun family friendly raft trip. Floating at the old mill is fun, if it is warm you can rent inner tubes at Tumalo Creek Kayak Company . We also like taking the chair lift to the top of Mt. Bachelor and having dinner and sunset views from the top!

Rephrasing:

Bend is a great place (obviously popular, as you see on this thread, but uncrowded). Hope you have at least 3 days.

It can be hot but you're from LA and there are water activities. And it's a comfortable "dry heat".

Crater Lake NP is only 90 miles away.

Breweries, Deschutes River and Cascade Lakes! Bend is Beer City USA. We have one brewery for approximately every 9000 people. There is probably a new one built since I started typing this. Crux, Worthy and 10 Barrel are all good beer, atmosphere and food. However, you couldn't go wrong with most. Wanderlust Tours offer a brew bus tour. We even have several Cycle Pubs in town.

Spend time at the river. Float from Riverbend Park to downtown. The city bus system offers service to bring you and your float back to the origin. Check out Sun Country Tours for rentals at the put-in. They rent floats and paddle boards.

Take a drive on the Cascade Lakes Highway. Amazing and Beautiful! Stop off at any of the lakes for a quit dip or a trail head for a short hike. Elk Lake, South Twin Lake and Cultus Lake have rentals. Stop off at Mt Bachelor to ride the Pine Marten lift for some more amazing views.
