Depoe Bay in Feb.,

Hi travelers!

My lady & I are planning a trip to Depoe Bay in Feb of 09. We like to whale watch, shop and.....check out fun things.

We are looking for input on sites, activities...nice hotels, places to eat etc.

Thanks, MM007

A couple of questions for you. Why Depoe Bay? How long will you have for this trip? Where will you start/end this trip? Driving, I assume, from where?

Be glad to help. As your question sits, however, Depoe Bay is not necessarily, IMO, a multi-night event in February. :)

We are flying in from ca. We have 5 days of vacation time. We have friends in Redmond. Uncertain of distance between Depoe & Redmond.

Your input please, Thanks Mark

Well, shiver me timbers! Depoe Bay in February. Could be nice and clear, I guess. Could be socked in with cold fog. Could be storming. Could be a good time, as suggested, to stay somewhere else along the coast where there's more to do just in case you hit really bad weather.

Depoe Bay not too far from Newport and Lincoln City- suspect you could find things to do there if weather crummy.

Redmond to Depoe Bay is about 4 hours, but in February will have to watch for snow over the Cascades and possibly the Coast Range-which would make the trek longer.

This site has your answers re: whale watching.

Redmond is just north of Bend, the latter abounds in interesting things to do. Though cold, probably not snowy enough to deter you from enjoying the area.

If you have the time, and if you have not been to the OR coast, do try to see more of it; fantastic! Perhaps two days on the coast, a day travel to Redmond, two days in that area.

We go to Depoe Bay 3 or 4 weeks each year, at varying times, have been in all months. I grew up on coast, and so did wife sort of. we both enjoy all times of year.

A winter strom is just great there, maybe best place on central coast to see ocean up close in storm.

warnings about trip from Redmond to coast are valid, you need to be careful in Feb..Cascades are usually problem coast range less so.

Where are you flying into and out of?

It makes a difference as far as suggestions for routes -- we do get snow here in Oregon in Feb!

Next question, which is the same as voyaging's first one, why Depoe Bay in particular? It's very small, no beach, lots of shops many of which are borderline tacky, only one good restaurant, and about 2,000 time share condos.

If there is a big storm, you do get fantastic wave action there, true.

To "do" anything, you'd need to drive (in the pouring rain, remember!), to Newport.

Weather in Feb will most likely be very wet, quite cool or cold, and dark. We do sometimes get a break from the rain for as much as a week in the winter (which to be honest keeps many of us from going completely insane), but we never know if we'll get it in Jan or Feb.

Depoe Bay does have some nice lodging - the Channel House and Whale Cove Inn come to mind immediately.
