Best Hotel / Area for Oregon Football

I am looking to come in for the Oregon / Michigan State game in September and am looking for suggestions on where to stay in Eugene. Ideally we would like to be near the stadium and near the main bar area (assuming there is one). Any comments would be helpful.

First, you need to know that Autzen Stadium in not on campus, though it is within walking distance.

Absent of a nightly budget preference, the Phoenix Inn is probably the best (rooms, rates and location) of a bunch of mediocre motels in the University District.

The Hilton and the Inn at the 5th are downtown and just as close to Autzen as those in the University District. A little further away but on a shuttle line, is the Valley River Inn. Springfield (across Interstate 5 from Eugene), in the Gateway area, has a bunch of decent chain motels.

Everything along Franklin Blvd is on the south side of the river, but within walking distance of the campus and the stadium, which is on the north side of the river (crossed by a convenient pedestrian/bike bridge). La Quinta Inn and a Marriott Residence Inn are on the north side of the river, with La Quinta adjacent to Alton Baker Park and probably the closest to the stadium. There are so many brewpubs around town and bars with so many Oregon microbrews on tap that you won't have enough time in town to sample them all. The Cooler is the closest sports bar to the stadium, but all of downtown and the campus area are close by.

You should avoid hotels/motels on the west side of town. Inn at the Fifth is the newest most upscale hotel in town and is just a short block from the Hilton. Both are downtown and within walking distance of the stadium. Valley River Inn and the Gateway area hotels in Springfield require driving or shuttle bus transportation. Check the goducks.com website for shuttle bus information when next season's info is posted. Driving to the stadium can be a real hassle, considering both parking challenges and DUI enforcement.

Considering the nature of this game, get your reservations as soon as possible. Get back to us closer to your visit and tell us where you'll be staying and we can get more specific about closest watering holes and restaurants.

Thanks for the info. Football trips are a blast and I don't want to miss the chance to catch a hell of a game in Eugene.
