day trips from Gold Beach

Tagging along to Gold Beach next week while my husband is working from Tuesday to Friday. I will have our five month old daughter and a car to drive about (she is good in the car) - looking for suggestions on day trips to make. Open to museums, aquariums, shopping, etc - no hiking though :-)

Your daughter's not at an age to appreciate much, but you might both enjoy a stroll through the Prehistoric Gardens between Port Orford and Gold Beach.

Towns within easy drives include Bandon to the north and Brookings and Crescent City to the south. You won't want to drive any of the inland roads out of Gold Beach. Stay on the coast.

Question: How are you getting to Gold Beach? You might spot some places that strike your fancy along the way.

You might enjoy poking around Old Town in Bandon (and, if the weather is nice, enjoying an al fresco lunch at the crab shack.

Thanks for the link to Old Town in Bandon - we are driving down from Vancouver, BC starting early on Saturday and staying overnight in Portland, with planned stops in Eugene, Salem, and Florence as well.

Be sure to stop at the Bandon Bakery...under the "Old Town" arch and straight ahead (across from the Radio Shack).

Gold Beach has the largest bookstore on the Oregon coast :-)

It's an easy one hour drive or less south to Crescent City where there are a number of things you might enjoy:

The museum in Crescent City is very good... tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60944-d17…

Wow, I hadn't looked at that since I added it to TA two years ago, so I'm glad others are reviewing it and that they liked it! Hopefully it's still open next week.

You might be amused by the Ship Ashore in Smith River ;-)

You can drive inland along the Rogue River south bank to Agness if you want. This is where the jet boats go. The drive is pleasant but once you get upriver a few miles you don't have good river views until you get to Agness. Good paved road.

Between Gold Beach and Brookings, you can drive the original old Hwy 101. It goes inland and follows an old wagon road, which was built over the original horse trail that has existed for who knows how many hundreds of years. Follow signs to Carpenterville; it's all paved.

Brookings is much larger and has a big Fred Meyer; both towns have a few art galleries and Gold Beach has a Myrtlewood store.

Brookings also has Fujito's Samurai sword at City Hall - he bombed the town during WWII (only time the US mainland has ever been bombed) and later regretted it and became an honorary citizen.

Since you like museums, you may be interested in the Mary D Hume in Gold Beach... tripadvisor.com/Travel-g51887-d1911689/Gold-…
