Dining in downtown Portland

My wife and I will be spending a romantic weekend in Portland next month and are looking for some restuarant suggestions. We prefer a good steak house but are open to just about anything food wise. Thanks!

If it's a steak house you're looking for, we've got a Morton's, Ruths Chris, El Gougo... errr El Gaucho, and a long-time local sentimental favorite, Ringside. But why not take your wife to a place like Fenouil, which always has a couple steaks on the menu, and lots of other dishes to tempt you as well. It's my wife's current favorite restaurant in town. http://www.fenouilinthepearl.com/menu.php

I think a place like Carlyle would be a hit too: http://www.carlylerestaurant.com/.

Ditto here for Fenouile, I love that place! Can't beat it for Romantic..beatiful space, good service and I really like the food.

bluehour gets raves from my friends in the steak department.

NW 13th & Everett ..

Paleys Place is nice, I like it for Thanksgiving dinner more than a romantic place , tables are a bit too close, but some it might be an option..NW21st

For good quality steaks and a romantic ambience, we like the London Grill in the Benson Hotel.

For a top-quality, romantic dining experience, Fenouil is great. Highly recommended romantic places on this board that we haven't tried yet, (but have looked inside and look very nice) include Giorgio's and Hurley's.

Genoa on SE Belmont serves a very intimate 7-course Italian meal for a clean $75 or so. Another one we like is the wine cellar at Pazzo Ristorante in the Vintage Plaza hotel (the upstairs is not as intimate - you have to ask). http://www.genoarestaurant.com/

The best views in Portland can be had at Portland City Grill.

Other romantic ideas are Carlyle, Paley's Place, or Fratelli, which is authentic Italian at a good (for the Pearl) price.

Fenouil is very nice, we had a very good lunch there last summer and the dining room is very elegant and romantic. We also like Paley's Place and Wildwood, Carlyle is a nice suggestion. Park Kitchen, clarklewis, Bluehour, are all very good. Hurley's is romantic and they have excellent food and service as well. :)

We have not been to Portalnd City Grill as prevoiusly mentioned, but my son really enjoys the place when he is in Portland. Another nice option right in downtown is Higgins. Have a great time! :)

Johann & Sandra is right, Portland City Grill for views! but Drinks only, the food is overpericed and mediocre at best! They are owned by the Henrys Tavern group, I think for that sort of food, Henrys is a better choice.

For a really nice Italian meal, not your typical red sauce all over your pasta and meat but fine Italian cooking, look into Giorgios on NW 12th..beautiful room, quiet lovely service, never had a bad experience there.

I agree also about Fratelli, which is (I think) a favorite of one of our local posters, mistletoe..

Park Kitchen is crowded, small and can be noisy with service that is a bit lacking, I would skip them...

Carlyle is fabulous, Wildwood is good but there are so many new special places, (syrahgirl, you really have to come back to Portland some day and update your list)

If you are interested in seafood, in town, on Park behind the Paramount Hotel, is Southpark..great seafood..

Jakes in the Governor Hotel does nice seafood too..but it is a stuffy sort of hotel restaurant, as is the Heathman ( imo)

There is Sungari Pearl if you want Chinese in a gorgeous space.

And Sinju, a perfect small beautiful Japanese restaurant..

All in the Pearl District ( my stomping grounds :)

Yes, I DO like Fratelli's.... and Giorgio's, Paley's Place, Hurley's, etc, etc, etc. :-) I just wasn't sure that Bill would always find a steak on the menu at those places. Especially Hurley's, where I'd guess he'd still be hungry for a steak dinner, even after paying a $200 dinner tab.

Paley's Place just remodeled in January. Worth a revisit if you haven't been in a while, locals.
