family weekend in Portland in Dec, where to stay, activities

We are from Everett, WA traveling to Portland for a long weekend before Christmas. My husband and I and 4" kids" aged 15 to 2, are looking for a location with shops and restaurants in walking distance, fun shopping and interesting places for young adults, maybe a play or music performance. Any suggestions?

Here are some Christmas activities you might be interested in. The Singing Christmas Tree is delightful for the whole family, book ASAP. The Grotto is lovely, with many local choirs singing.

Our family has been to the Singing Christmas Tree and it is ok, but I think some of the other events in town are better. The zoo and Peacock Lane are excellent!

Not sure when you are coming, but if you have not seen the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes, it is great! If you have seen it in NYC, that is the best, but they also have a traveling show which is good. They have been to Seattle a few times, so you might have caught them there, but if not they will be here a few days before Christmas. Even your 2 year old love it. The show is excellent!!!

Also, the Oregon Ballet Theatre puts on a very nice production of the Nutcracker.

The Saturday Market, which operates on both Saturdays and Sundays, is fun and kids tend to love it. Great place for them to find inexpensive gifts too.

A Christmas Story will be at the Gerding Theater.

The Christmas Ship Parade is nice as well.

I would stay downtown. Embassy Suites is nice for families and easy walking distance to Pioneer Squre (all Christmased up), the Pearl and Portland Center Stage for a play. Lots of shops both around the Square and in the Pearl. Easy access also to the Fox Tower and Pioneer Place, both of which always have great movies in play. Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions from everyone, its the inside local kind of information I was looking for. My blog had one typo that may change the replies. My "kids" are 15 to 25 years old. Kind of changes things. Please feel free to add anything else you enjoy around Portland in December.

If you stay near but not IN downtown it will be less expensive. Consider the Lloyd Center area in NE Portland. I don't know what your budget is but there is a Marriott Extended Stay hotel that's right near the Lloyd Center Shopping Mall and plenty to do right nearby. You can visit the mall and shop, eat, enjoy Christmas lights and they have an indoor ice skating rink. Right next to the mall is a 10-screen movie theater. LOTS of shops and eateries (chains and indie-owned) on Broadway just a few blocks away. Also the MAX light rail train is 2 blocks away and will take you into Downtown Portland for more activities, shopping, eating and shows for low cost (all-day pass approx $4 per person).

Events in PDX around Christmas:

Holiday Ale Festival - twenty nine regional brewers come together for the Northwest's biggest beer festival, tented and heated outdoors, with entertainment, food and, of course, plenty of beer!

Holiday Artisan Market - mid-December, Pioneer Courthouse Square, a must for Christmas shoppers, with Crafts that include jewelry, ceramics, stained glass, mosaics and much more.

Christmas Festival of Lights at the Grotto - possibly the largest Choral festival of its kind in the world, drawing 50,000 visitors to sing and celebrate Christmas.

A Tuna Christmas (comedy stage show) - 12/9-12/23/2010

Holidays are great here in Portland. I am sure you will get lots of ideas - my personal preferences are:

Saturday Market - has the Festival of the Last Minute - December 17th - 24th. As they put it - Procrastinators Rejoice! Open rain, shine or snow, Portland Saturday Market will be open every day from December 17 through Christmas Eve

Christmas ships www.christmasships.org - either from the waterfront, or maybe from a cruise ship www.portlandspirit.com Dec 9-21st

Festival of the Lights @ The Grotto - kind of quiet, low key. Traditional family event. Lots of lights, a puppet show, local choirs & carolers, petting zoo.

Zoolights - all the normal fun of the zoo - and lots of special decorations. They have a lot of animated animal displays (monkeys swinging across the trees, etc) all with a zoo theme,

If you like the Zoo lights then it may be less expensive to become a member . The zoo family+ membership will get in the whole family for a year. Plus allow you to bring guests. You could see the lights as many times as you like. You would get mail from them that shows what is going on and you may like to drive down more often. It's a good organization to join. We have belonged for years. Ours is a zoo+2 membership as we are retired. But we can still bring a friend and they let us know when other things are happening.

It also allows you to go to many zoos around the US> Check it out.

Enjoy your trip.
