In Portland for NYE weekend, advice on itinerary

Going to be in Portland for a few days during NYE (Friday - Monday night). I've been to Portland before for a conference but did not get to see the surrounding area. I was thinking of taking a day trip somewhere Saturday, but wasn't sure what the best option given the weather, and possible road conditions/closures etc. Some things I was considering were driving to Columbia Gorge + visiting wineries around Hood River, taking a trip to Willamette Valley for wine tasting (are wineries open Saturday?), or driving down the coast. Any advice?

Thanks!

The weather report I saw last night mentioned that there *might* be snow in Portland over New Years. Here are the local stations with weather info. It's hard to predict more than about two days in advance here, tho....

The direct route from Portland to the coast (Hwy 26) passes over the coast range at an altitude of about 1,600 feet, so check the snow levels. There is an alternate route (Hwy 30) , which only goes up to about 600 feet and is only a half hour or so longer driving time.

Sounds like your decision will be weather dependant.

Another great resource is the NOAA weather service page

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pqr/

As you can see- today we have winter weather advisory for the Coast/Cascade Ranges and a gale warning at the coast.

If weather is ok trip to beach would be good for storm watching. Note that the Columbia River Gorge gets much different weather than Portland- it can be much colder and pretty nasty sometimes with snow and ice- even though it is at low elevation(its the only 'cut' through the Cascade Range in Oregon/Washington so wind can howl through there like crazy in the winter and drop snow levels, etc).

If its bad weather-best bet would be to head to teh Willamette Valley for wine tasting.

Not trying to be too doom and gloom, but just want to let you know possible scenarios... weather could be just fine...

The closer trip for a day would definitely be the Columbia River

Gorge National Scenic Area. But that as well would be weather dependent as well.

We have some good wineries in the Gorge. If you stop in the Multnomah Falls Visitor Information Center we have maps.

I love Marchesi's Sangiovese. It's an award winner til 2011, when we see if it wins again. Marchesi is in Hood River. You will find many wineries in the area.

Unless we get significant snow, you should be OK in the Gorge. But as said, check the weather. If you are renting a car, chains will void your contract. The wind indeed does howl worse than desert wind. And you are shaded by being shaded by the mountain.

Have fun. Happy New Years!

Weather Dude said tonight that we may have snow on the (valley) floor Wed. and Thursday.

If you do get weather that you can drive into the Gorge, just take it easy and be steady on the throttle and breaks. They are very loud about if it is unsafe, and there is a snow gate in Troutdale. If it's too bad they will close it.

You can call Multnomah Falls Lodge extension 5 to check prior to leaving. They will happily give you information on whether it is safe to come out.

Didn't answer a question you asked... Yes, they are open on weekends.

Thanks for all the advice! We ended up going to the Columbia River Gorge, it was really fabulous there. Loved the view from Vista Point, as well as all the great waterfalls along the historic highway (posted some pics here http://www.flickr.com/photos/akira989/). This was definitely worth checking out, there was a few icy spots but nothing too bad.

Akira989,

My hubs and I have volunteered at Multnomah Falls for over 5 years, yet I never fail to be awed by the beauty of the area.

Those are beautiful pictures.

Thanks for the report and pictures.
