Looking for hotel in Portland for family

We are heading to Portland in March 2012 and did not know the best place to stay. Most of our time will be spent outside the city but when in the city we would like to be close to the best sighs to see. Our kids are 10 and 11 and we will be there for 5 nights.

We like the sound of visiting Old Town although not sure if this is a nice area to stay. We also like the sound of the "Heathman Hotel" but not sure if this a good location.

Please help us choose the best place to stay.

Frankly, 'Old Town' is a place for visiting in the daytime as, at night, it's a mix of clubgoers and homeless/transient (so not really family-friendly). If you insist on staying nearby and being centrally located to sight-seeing, The Embassy Suites (the historic Hotel Multnomah) is at SW 3rd & Pine and is good for families (an indoor pool is a plus) and is pretty close to MAX line.

Heathman is on SW Broadway a couple blocks south of Pioneer Courthouse Square. It's a stately (stuffy?) historic place, beautiful for certain, but probably not a #1 family choice. But location is very good & central.

Since most of your time is to 'be spent outside the city', it may make more sense to stay in an area slightly outside of it. One place that immediately comes to mind is Residence Inn at Lloyd Center; a few blocks from MAX, near a shopping mall, good freeway access, 5 minutes from downtown, spacious rooms, free parking (can't stress that enough: most downtown places charge $25-35/nt to valet park)... it all seems to add up for what you're seeking.

the parking fees in town hotels can add up quickly...you could stay out west on hwy 26. There is Residence Inn, Homewood Suites, Phoenix Inn, which gives you a lot of space for 4 people and on site free parking. Phoenix Inn and Residence Inn also have free breakfast. It is 10 miles away from the city but the drive into the city fairly quick, except for the morning commuter time.

I would do the Embassy Suites. Parking (across the street) will cost at least $16 a night. But the hotel is very nice, with a lovely pool and breakfast area. Which direction are you heading routinely out of downtown? That might help us if you want to stay a bit away.

RE: Residence Inns. There is one on the waterfront, but they will charge you to park. There is also one, and I like it better, right by Lloyd Center, about 2-3 miles from downtown and right on the MAX line - parking there is free, as is breakfast and, several nights a week, a serviceable dinner. If you are visiting friends or family here, the Lloyd Center location will also let you have guests for meals with no extra charge.

I also agree Lloyd center area would be best- also note that the max line to downtown is free from the lloyd center area- easy access to downtown, free parking, etc

We stayed at the Residence Inn at Lloyd Center last Christmas for about a week and loved it. I agree with everyone else (that was our first trip to Portland and we believe that the location and amenities was something that really made the trip memorable). The breakfast was quite good for being free (make your own waffle station, fruits, cereal, bagels, eggs, meat) and the staff WONDERFUL! Our mornings were NEVER rushed since breakfast was always a short walk out our door. The location was great, about a block (walking thru the theater parking lot) to the MAX station, which as everyone stated, was free to downtown. We got lucky last year using priceline but this year we didn't, got the Courtyard by Marriott Lloyd Center. So long winded but another vote for Residence Inn Lloyd Center.

Thank you all for your feedback. Based on this I think the Residence Inn at Lloyd centre sounds like the place to stay and looks to have plenty of room for a family. Also great tips regarding the cost of car parking at some hotels as this cost can always add up.

We are looking to do some day trips to out to Mt Hood, St Helens, Astoria and Hillsboro. Will the location of the Residence Inn Llyod centre be ok to access these areas. We will have a car so transportation will not be an issue.

Thanks
