Is It Worth Visiting 1st week of December?

My wife and I, experieced travellers in our early 60's will be in San Francisco for a few days until Nov 29 and then we were planning to fly to visit Portland and area for 4-5 days as we've never been to this area. We are planning on renting a car at the airport. We like goodfood, wine, touring the city sights and maybe day or 2 trip to the coast or the mountain area etc. We are told that it will be raining and quite cool. Is it worth taking a coastel trip this time of year? Sorry if this sounds scattered, just trying to get some suggestions for a 4-5 day trip considering the time of year. If it's a bad time we'll spend the time in San Diego but weve been there before. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

If you are one who makes the best of the vacation, and you are used to driving in the snow, then it is one of my favorite times to visit.

Everything is lit up pretty. The weather is very unpredictable. Could be you need snow shoes... hehe, or chains or it could mean you need bumbershoots and golashes.

Wear/bring layers of clothes for all types of weather.

If it turns out you need chains maybe, rent from dollar rent a car. Check some of the older rental places. Les

Schwab, our tire dealer will sell you chains then take them back if you don't need them, or

Dollar will rent them to you.

Multnomah Falls could be almost frozen up..(it's spring fed so it doesn't depend on snow melt) The Zoo has Zoolights. TheGrotto will be beautiful in all splendid of it's beauty. Drive in the west hills and view the city in Christmas attire.

Downtown and the waterfront will also be dressed up and you won't lack for places to go. Salty's is a fun really good restaurant on the waterfront, as is Mccormack and Schmidks. Sometimes you will see the dragon boat practices. Water parades of dressed up boats.. so fun to watch.

Just as soon as you firm up your details about wether or not to visit, make some reservations for restaurants. They fill up fast, but if I don't get them made, usually a call and explanation can get you in with a short wait.

That's if you like a good cold weather vacation. We do.

You may or may not have what you consider to be cold weather - you're from Montreal so you're used to weather much colder than Portland :-) Although it snows every year there, it may hit in early Dec or not until Feb.

We never know what the weather will be until just a few days ahead.

The coast may be sheeting down miserable rain or may be cloudy and reasonably warm. Or possibly you may experience some sun!

If the weather is miserable, there are inside options. Astoria has an excellent maritime museum, for example.

So, you've been to San Diego..... how about Santa Barbara, Laguna Beach and Cabo San Lucas?

Not that we don't have good food and wine in Portland; because we absolutely do. But when there's a reasonable chance that the weather will have you not wanting to leave your hotel room for the entire time you're here, I'd think you'd choose to go elsewhere.

Portland is worth visiting any time of year. There are great restaurants with high quality and extremely high value. The area has great wineries some within an hour of the city central. Just a great city overall. Don't forget to start researching food carts.
