My first visit to Portland

I will be visiting Portland for the first time, on January 10th. It's a long visit, 3 weeks. Any recommendations on where to stay? Down town at Benson hotel is good? I want to stay around malls, rest lively area. Which is easier for getting around town, taxi or buses? As I won't be driving. What are the things-to-do at this time of year? It's a medical trip, so nothing wild. Shopping, dinning around & movies are mostly what I plan on doing, nothing wild or adventurous.

Yes the Benson is one of the City's best hotels. Visiting Film Crews often stay there.

It would be in the heart of the city. Powells City of books is a standard must see stop. The Chinese Garden, close to Powells is one of the most authentic such gardens outside of China, All pretty close. Compared to Cairo.

January can be very cold with snow possible, so come prepared. There is downtown shopping as well as two large malls, one just east of the downtown and one on the outskirts (Lloyd Center and Clackamas Town Center) which you can get to using the MAX trains, the public transportation system.

OMSI is a great place to visit... http://www.omsi.edu/

There are also some tour companies if you are interested in taking a day tour from Portland:

Martin's Gorge Tours http://www.martinsgorgetours.com/

Eco Tours of Portland http://www.ecotours-of-oregon.com/

There also might be some river tours, although most of those are in the summer when it's warmer!

I would take into consideration which medical facility you will be going to before choosing a hotel.

Not all are "in" Portland. OHSU is up on the hill, or down at the Waterfront (with connecting tram), while Providence has facilities all over, and Adventist is the same. There are Legacy ones too.

Thank you all for your very precious replies. Really appreciate it that you took time to reply. I also like a the 'Nines' hotel. Do you think it is better than the Benson?

Think if I was to spend 3 weeks in Portland I would try to find something cheaper than the Benson or Nines.

And mrsomindy asks a good question about where for medical things

Where did you end up booking? We just spent 3 nights at The Nines on the Club Level, it was awesome! :)

Hotel Monaco is lovely and within walking distance from the shops bars and restaurants. It not far from the nines hotel which is also central. Hubers restaurant is a nice place to have a meal in. Mothers bistro for brunch was great. If you like beers let me know as there are plenty of places in Portland !

Powells book shop is worth a visit. Oregon zoo. Shops ! Definitely go to the weekend Portland market. Voodo dounuts was quirky !

Have fun. And remember there's no sales tax !

@syragirl I tried getting special medical stay rates at the Heathman (they refused 2 cooperate. Told me it's a business hotel, not for extended stays) benson hotel is quite expensive. Still have the Nines to ask. I found Marriott Portland down town. It's rates r moderate, but not so good, as I have read from ppl reviews.

@NLbLondon I like hotel Monaco too. Will compare rates w Nines hotel. Will go for the cheaper. It is a big budget for three weeks. Don't mind saving some money for shopping perhaps.

Really appreciate your replies. I was confused at first.
