Coastal drive

Our daughter is getting married in Cannon Beach first weekend in August. We are spending 2 nights there, 1 in Yachats and 2 in Port Orford. Would appreciate any must-dos. We love the coastal hiking, lighthouses and checking out the gorgeous scenery. Also love wine, microbrews, great eats and cute towns. Know it's TOP tourist season, but want to avoid "touristy" type places like theme parks and the like. Have traveled California coast lots of times, but never Oregon. Appreciate any advice you are willing to offer! Thanks!

Cannon Beach has a great beach for walking and lots of unique shops and good restaurants. You can also use it as a base for exploring up and down the North Coast -- Lewis & Clark sites around Astoria and Warrenton; Tillamook Creamery (lots of cheese samples and luscious ice cream in a gazillion flavors) and Three Capes Scenic Loop (with lighthouse and scenery galore),

On the way to Yachats, Clifftop vista fom Cape Foulweather is spectacular; then plan to spend a lot of time in Newport -- Oregon Coast Aquarium, more interesting shops at the Bayfront and Nye Beach areas. and nother lighthouse Lunch suggestions: Blackfish Cafe in Lincoln City, Tidal Raves in Depoe Bay, Saffron Salmon or Local Ocean Seafoods in Newport.

On the way to Port Orford, dune buggy rides in the dunes outside Florence; more shopping in Bandon along the waterfront (pick up some of the lemon pie or pumpkin pie candies at the Cranberry Sweets store), several good restaurant choices there as well; and the Wild Animal park south of town, Several interesting art galleries in Port Orford.

And of course, more scenic wonders all the way down the coast. Some sections of Hwy 101 will veer a bit off the coastline from time to time, but there will be more than enough to make the drive worthwhile!

The Oregon Coast is the most beautiful and interesting coastline in the country IMO. Maine comes in second. Many lighthouses to visit, the beaches are all public property, so feel free to stop at any turnout along the highway and hike down to the beach.

Dune buggies at Florence are great fun. There are no theme parks along the Oregon Coast. Come to think of it, there are no actual theme parks in all of Oregon, unless you count the Enchanted Forest near Salem, but that's really small.

Cannon Beach is a very cute, upscale town! We were there last night for dinner at Pizza a Fetta. You may also want to check out Seaside and Manzanita.

About 30 minutes away from Cannon Beach is Astoria, a small quaint town on the Columbia River. There are lots of great places to dine there. A couple of days ago we discovered Charlie's Chowder House. Awesome clam chowder (now my fave in the area) and Mahi Mahi. Columbian Cafe, Bridgewater Bistro, Silver Salmon Grille, Fulio's, Clemente's and The Bowpicker are other favorites of ours.

If you like fish n chips, The Bowpicker and The Ship Inn are two nice places to get this. Ship Inn is a full service restaurant with beautiful views of the Astoria-Megler Bridge and the Columbia River. Enjoy your travels! :)

A must do for me is a ride on a jet boat on the Rogue River out of Gold Beach- thats about as close to an amusement park ride as you'll find on the oregon coast. But its way better LOL!
