Things to do in March between Welches and Portland.

Two adults are heading to Welches to stay for a week in March, 2013. This is our first trip into Oregon where we will be staying for a week rather than passing through. Other than the hiking which we are looking forward to, what other activities and restaurants should we try within a couple hours' drive of Welches?

Thanks in advance!

You can get to Portland and Hood River in under two hours; maybe even Madras/Redmond/Bend. The state is you oyster.

Closer in, spend some time at Timberline lodge.

Hello, Mstchr

There are many things to do in the CRGSNA a two hour drive down the hill from Welches on Oregon 35.

Multnomah Falls, Mthoodrr (steam train through Hood River Valley), Sternwheeler Paddle boat in Cascade Locks, Hikes, Intrepretive Centers all over. Be sure to have dinner at Timberline, the sunset from the parking lot is so beautiful. You ca watch the wind sufers and kite boarders there in the Gorge nearby Hood River. Multnomah Falls has brochures and would be glad to help. In the Informtion Center.

And more. You won't run out of places to go.

We stayed two nights in Welches at Resort @ The Mountain. There is a good restaurant there. If you golf, the courses there are very nice. :)

Husband and I stayed in Welches last spring. I posted reviews of the establishments we patronized (El Burro Loco: Mexican food that's "Right on!", Altitude at The Resort at The Mountain: Cheap eats at happy hour, The Courses at The Resort at The Mountain: Nice mountain course, Whispering Woods Resort: Peaceful and comfortable) and I posted a (food-centric) trip report here: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g28958-i237-k53890…

March is still winter-y in Oregon, even if we call it "Spring Break". It is not golf season up there, and I don't even know if the courses will be open. Hiking will be cold and wet - and possibly snowy. You will definitely want to travel to lower elevations for hiking unless you are prepared to ski or snowshoe.

That said, it's a lovely area. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for all the feedback. Any suggestions about doing rather than eating? We love the outdoors and while the ground will still be cold and possibly snowy, are there any "must see" places, especially geologically awesome sights? (aside from the Gorge, where we will definitely be spending some time)

Thanks again!
