Overnight Trips from Portland? - July 2013

We'll be visiting family in Portland for the week of 4th of July and would like to take some side trips that we could either drive or train....suggestions? We are a family of four with 2 boys ages 6 and 4.

Thanks!

The Coast (Cannon Beach, Tillamook, etc), Mt. St. Helens, or Mt. Hood (Timberline) are the obvious answers. The less obvious ones might be McMinnville, to the Aviation Museum (and *gulp* water park), or to Maupin to float on the lower Deschutes. Also Astoria and across the bridge to the Lewis & Clark center. There's also Skamania Lodge, but I don't know what there is there for kids, except the pool.

July 4th week is terrfically busy at the coast. One thing your boys might like and it's away from congested Cannon Beach is the Tillamook Railroad ride

Another possibility out of Portland is a boat ride. There are jet boats to Astoria along the Columbia or shorter jet boats on the Willamette ... or, slower scenic tours:

Our daughter who lives in Newberg enjoys taking her grandkids (ages 7 and 4) to the waterpark at the Evergreen Museum about once a month. They never get tired of it and usually make a full day of it.
