Should we stay downtown Portland for day trips?

Just starting my research so I haven't looked at a good map yet for Oregon. Want to do Eugene, Williamette Valley wineries, downtown Portland & coast. Is it wise to stay downtown in Pearl district for the whole 7 days? Looking strongly at stayalfred's at the Enso. What is traffic like getting in & out of Portland during rush hour? My husband & I and our 23 yr old son & girlfriend heading there July 28-Aug 3 for a bonding get away.

Mrs O- Like I said, we make this drive every single week, round trip, and have been doing this for years. It is too bad that this drive stresses you out. Maybe your sister can come visit you and make things easier for you:)

It is pretty easy to avoid rush hour traffic when you are not working the normal 8-5 routine. Traffic is heavy during rush hour but having spent time in many cities that are the size of Portland or bigger, it really isn't that bad. If you live in a small town with a couple of traffic lights, it may scare the heck out of you. My mom hated to drive in Portland but she was elderly and didn't see well. I drive a lot for my business and at all hours of the day and the traffic is light here in comparison to many cities I have spent time in.

I also go to Seattle frequently to visit family and just avoid leaving Portland at peak times and also avoid arriving in Seattle during rush hour. Seattle is a heck of a lot worse than Portland!

Since you are on vacation, it may be a breeze for you to travel around Portland and up to Seattle, especially since you have driven in a large city.

For newcomers/tourists, the correct name is Joint Base Lewis-McChord, not McCloud... and the word Fort is not legitimately used anymore.

We departed Portland at 12:30 today, arrived in the University Village area before 3:30, and that included two stops. Good things can happen! But we felt for the folks driving southbound, two accidents caused serious backups.

Rush hours in Portland and Seattle can cause delays. The Columbia R. Bridge is one of the worst points. I agree with others, plan 3 - 4 hours, avoid rush hours. 2 or more in your car? Use the express/HOV lanes northbound.

Just because of our schedules, we are often making the drive during the commute hours. I love when we make the drive together and can use the HOV lanes, but that is not very often. Unless there is an accident, I can pretty much bet on how much time the trip will take +/- 15 minutes, and that is from one of our houses to the other, which is further than just downtown Portland to downtown Seattle.

Hm. Like most people we know, we continue to call it Fort Lewis. It's the name people grew up with, like Rose Garden. We always hit bad traffic around there.

cattrav--I think we all have our own nicknames for it:) We just call it McChord. It is a usual stop for us, since DH was career military.

Great example, Voyaging. One never knows when there will be accidents resulting in snarled traffic.

Yes indeed!
