Best neighborhood for family with 7 year olds & hotels?

Wondering if downtown is the place to try to stay. We'll be in Portland area for 3 days, with 2 seven year olds, and will have a car. Love being able to walk to sights, shops and restaurants. We're from cities so not deterred by normal city life. Still figuring what we'll want to see but looks like science museum, Pearl neighborhood, and maybe art museum. Open for more recommended sights too. Is the Courtyard Marriott downtown a good location? Any other recommendation that isn't as expensive (that seems to be in the $220-240 range) but is still nice and conveniently located. Also a plus if has suites (not necess) and parking isn't outrageously priced. Really like being someplace where there are things to walk to, even if we end up driving to a number of sights. Nice to walk to breakfast & dinner.

Check out the Inn@Northrup Station. Ideal for families, bright upbeat décor, nice breakfast, free parking and passes for the Portland Streetcar that stops right in front. Great neighborhood for walking to all the 23rd and 21st Street restaurants, boutiques, etc.

Checked that before posting as it was the one hotel I saw recommended from reading prior posts! Unfortunately that's totally booked! Would love some other suggestions! thanks

There is a new Residence Inn in The Pearl. Beautiful rooms, close to streetcar, easy walking distance to wonderful restaurants, downtown, plus parks a block away. You might give them a try.

I suggest you call the hotel directly as they often have cancellations that don;t show online. Perhaps you will get lucky!

Thanks for both of those suggestions! My friend who lives in Oregon (but not Portland) said to check to see if the Residence Inn is really "in the Pearl" as she said many places advertise being in a particular neighborhood but are on the outskirts and not really what you'd think of as that neighborhood. Do you know if the location of the Residence Inn, Pearl, is really good? Rates seemed good but about $36 for valet parking was a bit steep. Any thoughts on which location is more desirable -- Residence Inn, in the Pearl vs. Marriott Courtyard, City Center (includes parking)?

That new Residence Inn - Pearl is located at the northeastern fringe of the Pearl District, a couple blocks north of the Lovejoy ramp to the Broadway Bridge. It's close to streetcar, but quite a few blocks from places like Powell's or many of the restaurants and shops. Take a look at this map: explorethepearl.com/placecategory/hotels/ $36 valet parking seems ludicrous to me, especially considering there is an adjacent parking structure (Station Place) that charges something like $8/day and $4/overnight. …parkopedia.com/parking/…

Courtyard City Center has a more central location and is near both streetcar AND MAX light rail. That parking is included would be another plus for me... :)

Hope that helps,
