4 nights in Oregon, how much can we pack in?

My husband and I are traveling to Portland for an anniversary trip. We are wanting some time in the city, as well as some hiking/scenic sightseeing. We are planning to stay 2-3 nights in Portland and 1-2 nights somewhere else. We are trying to decide between spending the night in Hood River or Cannon Beach/Astoria. Can we do Columbia River Gorge as a day trip from Portland or would we enjoy it more if we spent 1-2 nights in Hood River. If we can do a day trip to the gorge, we could then drive to the coast and spend a night or two there. Is this too much to pack into 4 nights? We will be there the end of Sept.

Driving east from Portland, the scenery starts at about mile 20, and Hood River is only about 40 miles further down the road, which makes the Columbia River Gorge a popular and easy day trip for both visitors and locals. Cannon Beach, the nearest coastal town is about 80 miles from Portland, and can also be seen/done as a day trip, but I think you'd enjoy it more if you spent a night or two. I know we do.

Whatever you decide, you picked a good time of year to visit. Kids are back in school, and summer vacationers have gone home, but weather in September is usually still reliably nice. Perfect for long walks on the beach.

You can do either trip as a day one.

Will you want to leave or stop and admire things, take advantage of the photo ops around, and immerse yourself in your surroundings. Will you want to get out and enjoy the exhibits? What is jaw dropping to one is Hmmmmmmmm to another.

It is whatever holds your interest more that you should do.

We live in Troutdale, the mouth of the Gorge, and yet we frequently make Hood River, The Dalles or Stevenson, WA an overnight destination. It is coming on harvest season and we use that as an excuse but but we are drawn year round.

Enjoy your anniversary.

Try to spend a couple of nights at the coast. Hotel prices should drop after this weekend. The Ocean Lodge is a nice place to check out in Cannon Beach. :).
