What to wear??

Aloha!

Arriving from Oahu 3-10 Oct, can't wait. I've been following the weather reports, it's hard to believe since it's still in the high 80's here! Anyway, other than the rain that I expect, do I need to dress for temps below 50 degrees by then?? Will I ever see the sun there? Please tolerate these stupid tourist questions...

Oh my, I may have to dig out the clothes that I used when we lived in Fairbanks, Alaska-now that's c-c-cold...

Sillybilly, check out my 2 puglets, I noticed your black one!

Thanks for the tips, I only hear great things about your city!

Chances are good that you will have lots of weather here. Expect anything from 50 degrees to mid 70's. Bring a jacket for rain and layers. You might be suprised how warm you will get when the sun come out. Most of us don't turn on the heat in our houses until late October so this is a real transitional period. We will be enjoying Maui's weather while you enjoy ours. Check out 5 day weather on kgw.com and koin.com and just ignore the news stories - too much bad news.

Don't waste luggage space with anything heavy you wore in Alaska,

It isn't even fall yet really, Julauf is right you can expect some chilliness. when you come. be ready to layer. and have something water resistant

wish I was going to Maui or Kauai, though we are going to Yucatan.

Well, it is not that c-c-cold here yet, in Oct but it is most likely damp..so what I have learned is to wear layers..which are in style this season so it will be easy:)

Today is in the mid 60s..I wore a tee with a cotton sweater with a light jacket..Bring something waterproof..cottons and shoes that can take lots of walking and wet.

I doubt it would be below 50 here in Oct !

If it were, let me tell you about REI...or Anthropologie ... or Nordstroms...LOL

I bet you are gonna love it here :O)

Keep in mind that 50 degrees feels really cold when you're used to Oahu.

Expect high temperatures in the high 60s with low temperatures hovering right around 50.

We average 13 days of rain in October, so...

Portlanders will normally wear a nice mid-weight jacket with a light sweater - often Gore-Tex or another waterproof material. You, being from Oahu, might want something warmer - 50 degrees is probably a lot colder for you than it is for us.

No tourist questions are stupid - how are you supposed to know these things when you don't live here? We're all happy to help. That's what these forums are for.

Johann and Sandra is right no stupid tourist questions.

We have traveled a fair amount and have had a lot our simple questions answered on boards like these. Little stuff like how do you get out of airport to ?? what are best places to go? etc

Part of reason I respond on Wash and Ore boards and was on Kauai and Big Isle boards but have slowed there since been two years since last time to Hawaii.

Very good points that folks from hawaii find cooler temps to be much colder than we do. I have been in Oahu when it was in the low 70's and the clerks were complaining about the cold, and were wearing jeans and a sweater. Layers make it easy! And you can always buy a fun sweatshirt here to take home for those freezing cold 68 days of winter !!!

Wow, thanks so much, gang-you've been very helpful.

As far as shopping, I already have some stores scoped out that I plan on hitting-Title Nine, J Crew, REI-I hope to get some summer stuff on sale for Hawaii!! :)

The tourist questions responses were very nice of you-sometimes, here, we don't necessarily feel that way, cause boy, do we get the off-the-wall ones. My husband's a lifeguard and do you know how many times he is asked about the weather?? He nicely tells them he's a lifeguard, not a weatherman...

That, and of course, the shark questions.

However, we try to be ambassadors of aloha,

so mahalo (thank you) everyone!!

Mahalo! and since I have been shopping like a fiend recently, I can tell you that there are no real sales left of summer clothes, only all the new winter stuff out.

But there are still great shops and things you can get for Hawaii...( I lived in Oahu when I was little :) )

LOL phirl, you always make me laugh.

I am a shopping Fiend.. or am I shopping fiendishly?

whatever, my husband is the most patient man in the world, thank goodness :)

obeythepug, it is cool and wet and grey and beautiful here right now.

I can see the hills from my apt and they look like a Japanese Watercolor, all misty tall trees and clouds.
