Best spot for Fireworks viewing?

Our first 4th of July in Sunriver. I know the fireworks are somewhere in Bend. Can anyone tell me a good spot to park for the fireworks and how far of a drive from Sunriver resort that might be?

Anything going on in the evening until the fireworks start at about - 10:00?

There's a good summary of other activities going on that day here: http://www.hackbend.com/freeguide (scroll down to the part about the 4th of July).

Personally I like to go to Ponderosa Park (aka Hal Puddy) to watch the fireworks. It's close enough that you can see all the action, but set back away from the huge crowds. People bring their own stuff and light it off while waiting for the "real" show. Also it's a divey-but-not-dangerous neighborhood so there's a good chance for some interesting people watching. (Still family friendly with nothing too illegal or scary - unless you count the rednecks shooting of the fireworks they bought off the rez in Washington!)

But really, you can see them from just about anywhere in Bend. The best way to check your spot is during the day, look and see if you can see the top of Pilot Butte. If so? Check! You'll definitely be able to see the fireworks. If not? As long as there isn't another big hill between you and Pilot Butte, you'll still probably be able to see all the fireworks (but will miss the part where the butte catches on fire).

If you go to Ponderosa Park, it's usually about a 20-25 min drive from the Sunriver mall. TRAFFIC! IS!! TERRIBLE!!! immediately following the show. Don't expect to go anywhere very quickly (or even slowly) since the entire area bordered by 3rd Street/Hwy 97, 27th Street, Empire Road and Knott Road is one big mess. Greenwood/Highway 20 and Reed Market Rd are the worst. Which is why we walk or ride our bikes the 2.5 miles from home. :-) The one time we drove it took us more than an hour to get home afterwards.

And yes... it's still totally worth it. They put on an amazing show!!

Thanks for the info - especially about the traffic. Good to be prepared in advance for that!

Looking forward to watching the Butte catch on fire!
