new to erie-where to stay

Hi,

My son will be doing a summer internship here in Erie. He will be 8 hours from home so we will need to come to Erie to visit him on our vacation. I have no idea what to do in Erie. We would like to find a place either on the lake or just a reasonably priced hotel with a nice pool. I think once we find a good place to stay then we can figure out what we can do while we are there. We will be coming around mid-July.Thank you,

Close to the lake the best, and only option in my opinion, is the Bel-Aire Clarion.

Aside from that, there's the Sheraton on the bay in the city with the new convention center. This will be a bit pricier though. The only other hotel I'd look into in the city is the Avalon. Both of these will be around 15 minutes to Presque Isle

Most of the hotel options will be on Peach / I-90. There's any number of places there from an Econo Lodge to Hampton, Residence Inn, Courtyard, etc etc. You'll get the most bang for your buck here but will be 20 minutes from Presque Isle.

July is definitely the best time to go to Erie. Summers are great there and the lake is perfect. Depending on what you like to do, you can book a fishing charter, relax on the beach, have some drinks outside on the bay, do wine tours in North East, watch the sunset, catch a local show on the bay, parasail, etc.

If anything sounds interesting let us know and we can be more specific on something.

In July, check out "8 Great Tuesdays", a free concert every Tuesday night at Liberty Park (foot of Liberty Street right on the bay). Presque Isle (the "beach") also has a free concert series on Wednesday nights. The schedules are not out yet, but will be announced in the spring. You can find a lot of info on the local newspaper website (Goerie.com). You can see minor league baseball at a really cute little ballpark (Jerry Uht Park) downtown at 10th & French. Also, if you are into this sort of thing, check out Presque Isle Downs, a very nice horse racetrack with a casino (slots only). In July, they should be racing about 5 nights a week (I-90 @ Route 97 exit). I advise you to book your hotel stay as far in advance as possible. Believe it or not, it is often impossible to get a room in Erie in July, especially if there happens to be a soccer tournament or something else going on. Do you golf? I can give you some good recommendations if you do. If you have any other questions, just ask!
