Young children, Hershey park and a choclate lover.

I'm watching Chocolate Confidential and saw that Hershey is home to Hershey Land.

I would really like to go to the city of Chocolate on our next family vacation but I thought I would seek some advice first.

We are a family of six, on our next vacation our children will be 13 (girl), 8 (boy), 5 (boy) and 2 (boy) years of ago.

Can anyone on this forum advise me if a family trip to the land of sweetness should wait until everyone is older or are there enough activities and sites to see for children of all ages?

There is absolutely enough to do for all of your family and this is a great town! One word of warning is that you cannot tour the actual factory - I would hate for you to travel this far and think that is the case.

Some of the things to do:

1/ Hershey Chocolate World - chocolate making ride, 3D Show, trolley tour

2/ Hershey Park - amusement park with rides and entertainment for all ages

3/ The Hershey Story - museum about all things Hershey:the town, the company and the legacy he left behind

4/ Hershey Gardens - beautiful and has a butterfly house

5/ Hershey Theatre - tours as well as shows when they come through

6/Antique Auto Musuem - great display of cars from the earliest on

7/ Indian Echo Caverns - underground caverns that are really fun for the family to see

This is just what I can think of - and they are all within 5 miles of each other.

There is even more to see and do if you travel a bit - Amish in Lancaster, Civil War sites in Gettysburg.

Let me know if you'd like any more information!

There is plenty to do in Hershey and the surrounding area for a family with children in your age ranges.

1. There is the Whitaker Center, which has the Harsco Science Center (many hands-on exhibits) and an IMAX Theater (Harrisburg). (www.whitakercenter.org/science/index.asp).

2. Also in Harrisburg, you can ride the “Pride of the Susquehanna” riverboat on City Island, play Water Golf, take a horse drawn carriage ride, or catch a Harrisburg Senators minor league baseball game during the summer (www.harrisburgpa.gov/parksRec/cityIsland/).

3. The PA State Capitol has tours and there is the PA Museum with a variety of displays, both are in Harrisburg. (http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/toursWelcome.cfm and http://www.statemuseumpa.org/).

4. There is also a Civil War Museum in Harrisburg. (http://www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org/).

5. Fort Hunter Park in Harrisburg has a Victorian-era mansion, restored barn, church, stable, and tavern house that illustrate life in the 1800s (http://www.forthunter.org/).

6. Harrisburg’s Wildwood Lake Sanctuary is a scenic wetland home to rare birds, delicate flowers, amphibians, and animals; the Olwine Nature Center has exhibits (http://www.wildwoodlake.org/).

7. If you are looking for a break from the HersheyPark scene, there are two family mini golf centers in the area worth checking out – Adventure Sports (http://www.adventurehershey.com/) and Challenge Family Fun Center (http://www.challengefamilyfun.com/).

8. The Middletown &-Hummelstown Railroad (http://www.mhrailroad.com/) is a nice relaxing old-fashioned railroad trip. You can combine it with a visit to Indian Echo Caverns (http://www.indianechocaverns.com/).

9. Hershey attractions (http://www.hersheypa.com/) which include:

a. Hershey Park (http://www.hersheypark.com/index.php

b. Hershey Gardens (http://www.hersheygardens.org/)

c. The Hershey Story (http://www.hersheystory.org/)

d. Hershey Trolley Works (http://hersheytrolleyworks.com/)

e. Chocolate World (http://www.hersheys.com/chocolateworld/)

f. Milton Hershey School Founder’s Hall (mhs-pa.org/about/…)

10. The Antique Auto Museum near Hershey Park( http://www.aacamuseum.org/)

11. Lake Tobias Wildlife Park in Halifax offers a safari tour and petting zoo. It is about a half hour drive north of Harrisburg. ( http://www.laketobias.com/)

12. In the colder months, Ski Roundtop offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. They also have some year round and warmer weather activities like ropes and challenge courses. (http://www.skiroundtop.com/)
