Lakes/Rivers/Hiking suggestions for driving vacation in PA

My hubby and I are planning a driving vacation from Cleveland to Harrisburg, PA with stops along the way. Want to spend a day at a lake, do a day hikes of Appalachian Trail, head to Hershey, then Gettysburg.

Any suggested routes, or great rivers/lakes to visit that have boat or kayak rentals. Suggested entrance points to AP for day hiking?

Thank you!

There is a lot of great outdoor recreation in PA between Cleveland and Harrisburg. Much of it is west of the Susquehanna River, so you may want to consider Gettysburg before Hershey when planning your route, but either way it's not too far.

Farther west in PA, one of our favorite spots for hiking, whitewater boating and trail biking is Ohiopyle State Park in the Laurel Highlands region.

Just west of Gettysburg on Rt. 30, Caledonia State Park offers access to the Appalachian Trail.

In York County, Lake Redman offers kayak and canoe rentals.

As does Shank's Mare, an outfitter along the York County side of the Susquehanna River

In the general Hershey area, I would recommend Memorial Lake State Park for hiking and boat/kayak rentals. The website information on the hiking trails is somewhat misleading. You are able to hike the entire way around the lake; however, a portion of the hike is not on a trail but along a road that isn't usually heavily traveled.

A suggested entry point to the AT would be from PA route 225 at the top of Peter's Mountain. Be very careful as the small parking lot is at the very top of the mountain (heading north it will be on your right) just as the road curves to go down the mountain. Another entry point would be from the Ibberson Conservation area.
