Beginner surfing in SJDS

I'm hoping to get on the board whilst I'm in SJDS. I'm a budget traveller, so hoping to keep my costs to a minimum. What are the best beaches around SJDS for a beginner surfer? Would you recommend getting a surf lesson or just practising on your own? I've had beginner lessons a couple of years ago, but haven't surfed since. Is it cheaper to do it in Nica or Costa Rica? As I'm planning to go to Tamarindo after SJDS.

Nicaragua will always be cheaper than Costa Rica, from San Juan del sur take a shuttle US$5 to Maderas, get a board there and enjoy the water
