CR to SJDS...can you drive a rental car across the border?

We will be staying in the Tamarindo area and want to take a side trip for a couple nights in SJDS. As we will have a rental car in CR I just wondered if it is ok/easy to take a rental car across the border.

It will be myself, hubby and our 2 yr old son...we are pretty experienced at road tripping around the world crossing borders, but it seems everyone is posting about taxi's and buses for the border crossing so I just thought I would ask.

Thanks!

I have never tried it, but have been told many times in no uncertain terms that one cannot cross the border in a rental car.

Nop you are no allowed to take rent a cars across the border but ask to your rent a car company if they have a partner company in the other side to make things easier per instant Alamo Rent a car

I was in CR several years ago and tried to do exactly that -CR to SJDS. However, the very unfriendly, non-English-speaking, machine-pistol toting border guards would not allow the rental car to go through.
