downtown lancaster

Just wondering what it means for some hotel reviews I have read about "the obvious crime problem in downtown Lancaster". What is considered downtown, and is there a lot of crime?

Although realistically just about anything can happen just about anywhere, most of the shootings in the paper involve people who know each other, and have disputes (often drugs). They usually take place in areas that tourists would not normally plan to frequent anyhow. That said, I am not sure why tourists would like to stay downtown, as everything is shut up pretty tightly, so nothing to do there. So many places to stay in nearby burbs without these problems.

Lancaster is a charming and very historic city, well worth at least a day trip for any visitor.

The crime level is no higher or lower than comparable cities of their size and general area. We have had an abnormally high influx of hispanic population (the city is now appx. 30% hispanic residents) and there is evidence that Lancaster (along with neighboring Reading) is becoming a key city in drug trafficking.

That said, there are many areas of the city where it is safe to walk around at night. The southeast quadrant, starting from the edge of the commercial downtown shopping district, has the vast majority of crime, while the northwest (which includes the campus of F&M college and our new minor league baseball stadium) is the most affluent and relatively safe.

After much bickering and financing setbacks, a major hotel and convention center is now under construction on the downtown square. A new hotel has opened in the northwest, in a former tobacco warehouse, a restaurant/lounge in another, and many more upscale projects are in the planning stages.

Lancaster is clearly investing in their downtown and will not allow crime to deter visitors from wanting to come "downtown" and even stay there for their vacation.
