Driving from Harrisburg to Philly -detour through lancaster?

We are driving from Harrisburg to Phily - is it worth taking a drive through lancaster or should we just skip it? If so, what route do you suggest? Any suggested stops on the way?

Well, assuming you want to actually see Amish Farms you would have to go off of the major highways.

I am assuming your normal route would be along the Turnpike. A Detour would be 283 SE toRoute 30 around Lancaster city then NE on Route 222 to Route 772(So far this is all freeway driving and not terribly scenic, although there are some attracive non-amish farms along 283)

Take Route 772 SE to Route 30, crossing Routes 23 and 340. This will take you through the heart of the Amish Country You will see many buggys and farmers working the fields with horsedrawn equipment(assuming it is not Sunday)There will be many farmstands and Amish businesses along this route, along with many tourist Businesses at the intersection of 772 and 340, in Intercourse.

Continue east on 30 at Gap taking 202 north to the turnpike if you prefer.

This will probably add about an hour and a half to your trip if you don't stop.

Another option to see some scenery would be to take Rt. 283 E to 30 E (all limited access 65-55mph) and then follow Rt. 340 E (which will take you through Intercourse also). There's really not much to see along the turnpike.

This will add some time to your trip, but isn't really a detour. In the pre-turnpike era, it was either that or Rt. 30 between those desinations. In fact, Rt. 340 is also known as "The Old Philadelphia Pike."

Lancaster has a lot more to offer than Amish and farmland, but we would need to know your interests to suggest stops.
