Trip Report to Laurel Higlands

Just got back from a great Labor Day weekend. This was our first time (but not the last) to this gorgeous area.

We stayed at Country Seasons B&B. You can read my review there. Great time/hosts. This is in Mill Run about 5 miles past Ohiopyle. It is also about 3 miles from Fallingwater. On Saturday, we arrived as the Music in the Mountains festival was just starting. Music, food, crafts and a wonderful Teddy Roosevelt impersonator. We had no idea what to expect and were just wowed by the great activities, kayaking, rafting, swimming, biking, walking, etc all in this area. It is right on the bike trail.

First night we had dinner at Autumn Restaurant in Nemacolin. What a spectacular place even just to wander if you don't want to spend the $500 per night to stay there. Doesn't matter if you are a guest or just wandering as the staff was unfailingly polite and helpful.

Great dinner and much fun wandering thru checking out the artwork and tiffany windows.

Sunday was Fallingwater. Not going to say much about this as so much has already been written. Let's just make it clear that this is the definition of a "must see".

Later that day, the wives went back to Nemacolin to wander, my brother went swimming in the Yough and I took a 20 mile ride to Confluence.

Dinner was at River's Edge in confluence which was very good and very relaxing sitting on the veranda with the river just below.

We need to go back as we had too little time to see all that we wanted.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to our beautiful playground in the Laurel Highlands. If you travel back to the area another great restaurant is near the Donegal Turnpike entrance. It is Out of the Fire Cafe. Check out their website http://www.outofthefirecafe.com/ . As good as any 5* restaurant in a major city. You can bring your own wine or beer. If you don't have any with you it's available locally at Sarnelli's market in Jones Mills (1 mile form the restaurant heading east on Rt.31. sarnelliscornerpa.com/jones-mills-pa-sarnell… .

Glad you enjoyed Fallingwater. If you are a Wright afficiando there is also another Wright built house at Kentuck Knob which is close to Ohiopyle.

http://www.kentuckknob.com/

There is also another Wright complex, one home built by Wright that was reconstructed and several built by a protege. It is about 10 miles from Donegal and the place is called Polymath Park, http://www.polymathpark.com/ . You can even stay in one of the houses here!

There are also some great hiking trails right across from the Fallingwater entrance in an area called Bear Run Nature Reserve, www.paconserve.org/assets/2010_Bear_Run.pdf .

The hiking and biking trails are great as you have already experienced. Be sure to stop by one of the smaller falls area, Cucumber Falls, in Ohiopyle State Park. In Confluence check out Lucky Dog Cafe for another restaurant option. It is a hidden gem in the middle of that small town!

If you are into history, you were also not far from Fort Necessity, the opening action of the French and Indian War which ultimately set the stage for the American Revolution!. http://www.nps.gov/fone/index.htm .

There are also some nice wineries in the area. Christain Klay (near Nemacolin) http://www.cwklaywinery.com/ , Stone Villa, near Polymath Park,

http://www.stonevilla.com/, and Glades Pike http://gladespikewinery.com/.

As you can probably tell I love living here in this beautuful area!

We are renting a cottage in Seven Springs. Do you know where can we rent bikes?

Also where to get a map of the hiking trails?

Thank you

You should start a new thread instead of adding to a 2 yr old report.
