No, but it isn't the best area. It's surrounded by some of the 'worse' areas of the city, but as long as you know where you're going, you should be okay. In the past there have been some problems, but no more than any other city.

What do you plan to do in Oakland? If you're there during the day for work or tourist activities, you'll be fine. If you're a student thinking of living there, I'd be careful about who you rent from. There has been a lot of press coverage recently about some landlords who take advantage of students, don't take care of the property, etc.

Well put Needsavacation. It isn't a high crime area, and as long as you are there during the day, crime really shouldn't be an issue, but after dark, once you get away from the busiest areas, crime could be more of an issue.

Sebastianisabella, give us a little more detail about what the circumstances leading to your question are, and also what you are used to. If you spend plenty of time in a big city, Oakland won't be any worse, but if you are only used to small towns or rural areas, Oakland could be scary to you. It isn't anything like what most people think of when you say "college town" because the University of Pittsburgh buildings are scattered among everything else in Oakland - so you have quite a mix of buildings - museums, green spaces, shopping, restaurants, churches, hospitals, classroom buildings, student housing, etc.

I would describe Oakland as gritty. Depending on your perspective you will either find it delightfully quirky or scary. (Personally, I feel perfectly safe there.)

It does have good access to the main Carnegie Museum, and the Phipps Conservatory, where the Dale Chihluly exhibit is now showing.
