Horrible experience at Casino

I've been in many Casinos worldwide and this is the worst I've ever experienced. Half of the time the machines won't except the card without inserting it at least 15 times. At one machine I waited for service for 30 minutes and still no one ever showed up. There are more cashiers working at Giant Eagle than at the Casino. For so many people being out of work you'd think they would hire more people. We couldn't find one person in our party as she was in smoking and we weren't. Three quarters of the Casino is smoking and you can hardly breathe. It permiates the whole place.

We asked to have her paged as we had to leave and they said they aren't allowed to page anyone not even in an emergency unless you use their EMT's that are there. I said "We could be here till morning if we couldn't find our other party and they said yes". To run a casino like that is horrific. We waited in line another 30 minutes to get our money. The food is expensive and horrible.

We will never, ever return to a place so poorly run. It's going to ruin a lot of families to boot. One of the biggest dissapointments in a Casino that my entire party had ever experienced. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible! Service Horrendous!

Interesting first TripAdvisor post ever....Did you complain to management when you were there, or just on TA?

You couldn't even find a manager or someone in charge for that either. I even tried that. No one was available for anything. I couldn't find any other other place to post and this was the only thing that came up that I could post on. I just wanted to make others aware of this.

Chinab, you didn't say so specifically, but I assume you're talking about Rivers. I have a friend who goes there on its shuttle bus from Downtown. She's been at Rivers probably six time since it opened. She doesn't hate it, but she does give it a mixed review. Some employees are very pleasant and helpful, while others have an attitude, she says. And there never seems to be as many employees on the floor when she needs one as there are in other casinos. She thinks Rivers definitely needs to train its staff better in casino procedures and get rid of those who can't learn proper customer service skills. This is from a woman who worked in retail management for decades. Another thing about Rivers my friend doesn't like is that it doesn't seem to pay out as much as the Meadows and it is chintzy on giving out comps. But she did come out ahead about $200 on her last visit in June.

My only visit to Rivers happened during a Saturday last October or November. Another friend and I were in the Carnegie Science Center, and we went over to Rivers for lunch. We just walked around looking at everything and didn't gamble, although we did sign up for slot cards. The staff at the sign-up counter was efficient, but not friendly. They took our information and gave us the cards, but they didn't offer any details about how to use them or what they would do for us. At a restaurant on the first floor, it was a long 20 minutes from the time we got in line--there were maybe six or seven people ahead of us--to the time we got our sandwiches. And here, too, the cashier wasn't a happy person--she didn't even thank us for our purchase. At least, the food was decent.

Yes, I was talking about three rivers and thanks for replying. Your right noone was friendly at all and we will never go back there. May main complaint was that you couldn't find anyone to help you and that wouldn't page anyone in an emergency.

Doesn't sound like complaining to management would have done much good. Could be the whole place needs a crash course in customer service. There is too much "close by" competition to lure customers away if they have a bad experience.

We live 10 minutes from Mountaineer Casino and about 40 minutes from Wheeling Island, and while we don't gamble, we do visit occasionally for CVB meetings, concerts, dining out or to see the Pirates "Winter Caravan". We've never had an unpleasant experience with the employees at either WV casino, but both places are terribly smoke filled. Sometimes just walking through the lobby leaves us needing to wash our clothes and hair when we get home!!!

You are so right. Your right the smoke there is absolutely disgusting. It's mainly geared to smokers. That's exactly what we did washed our hair, and threw our clothes in the washer. You had to. I finding everyone to date is feeling the same way about this place. You couldn't even find a manager to complain to if you wanted to. Thanks for replying.

I have voiced my share of complaints about Rivers Casino on this forum. I also frequent the Rivers as well as the Meadows on a fairly regular basis. Lately I have been quite disappointed in the Meadows which once upon a time not so long ago I favored over the Rivers. Perks are now few, machines are tight and on the 5th of July it was pretty much empty. The food court is expensive and mediocre at best. We used to receive coupons for food to be used at any of the restaurants but no more.

Rivers has steadily improved over the past year and my opinion is no longer as critical. I still think the seafood buffet needs a little work for the price. West End Cafe is decent. Wheelhouse is good. Many of the machines have been moved around to make way for table games which could contribute to problems. Sliding the card in the machines is an art at best. I don't care which casino you visit, here, AC or Vegas sometimes they register right away and others it takes a few tries. My S/O has problems no matter where we go and on a few occasions so do I. He tends to be a bit forceful and I've found if you attempt to gently usually works fine. I see managers quite often as well as slot attendants walking the floor at Rivers. I still think there should be more sites available for beverage dispense. Larger cups too. My suggestion would be to have gone to the cashier's cage or to the men usually standing at the casino entrance from the garage. Every time I visit there is always at least 2 standing there. I'm sure any of them would have guided you in the right direction.

I attended both the Jimmy Buffet/Who cover band concert and Beatlemania. What a nice way to spend an evening and free to boot. You weren't obligated to go into the casino as there were venues available to purchase drinks and food. The drinks were reasonable the food a bit pricey. I noticed many families enjoying the music on the 4th. In our area there were at least 4 families with children under the age of 10. The kids were dancing and having a good time. That evening a number of machines were down for maintenance yet still quite many available for play. If you have only visited once and didn't like it don't go back. After my initial visit last summer I continued to stop occasionally but mostly going to the Meadows. Now I have reservations with regard to a Meadow's return and will probably stick closer to home, unless......the perks form the Meadows improve.

It will be interesting to see how the competition plays out now that table games are available and most of the casinos are within a 3 hr drive or less from each other. Driving time for me to Rivers 15-20 minutes including parking, Meadows 40-50 minutes, Wheeling 1 hr, Mountaineer 1 hr 10 min, Erie 2 hrs 10 min. and Salamanca 3 hrs 10 min max. There are certainly a number of choices. If you're not satisfied with one it's on to the next :-)

Thanks for writing and the only thing I can say about the so called managers and attendents standing nearby none of them did anything to help. They kept saying they were sorry and said they would get help but after waiting a half hour at one machine alone absolutely no one came. And we had gone to the Cashiers desk and they said they had no one to help us as they were the only 2 there. But we tried as many people we could find that worked there and to no avail. Like I said even to the point that we had to have someone paged in an emergency and they said they weren't allowed to page anyone. I guess they felt that if they paged someone and we would leave they would have lost money.

Just my 2 cents here...

I can understand how upset you must have felt...BUT

You really can't blame the casino because you couldn't find your friend, if you had designated a place & a time to meet before leaving, it would've saved you a ton of worry...let alone frustration and time.

Secondly, you know they smoke in casino's...I mean...duh! Should've told your friend to meet you outside at a specific time...then you wouldn't have had to walk through all the smoke...

Lastly, when has anyone ever had a "fabulous" meal at a casino? Nobody I know...you eat because you're hungry...you chose what food you were going to consume, not the casino...

just sayin

Your absolutely right we should have designated a spot but the fact that they won't page anyone in an emergency is an outrage. And yes, Ive been in many casinos and they have always had a separation for smokers and non smokers. But this one has nonsmoking put throughout the smoking areas which makes no sense. Anyone that is a non smoker couldn't stand being around all of that smoke. They should have some kind of division for the both. And there's no excuse for not having any help at the machines especially when I had money in the one and waited for a half hour and still noone ever showed up. To me that's inexcusable. You don't have to wait to give them your money but they sure don't come when they have yours.
