Moving to Pittsburgh, PA

Hello,

We are moving to Pittsburgh in the end of the summer. I have never been there and I need some help finding activities (soccer, ballet, etc) for my 4 year old daughter.

We’ll be in the Squirrel Hill South area.

I would like to know if there are any recreational facilities or soccer leagues in my area, as well as ballet studios.

I appreciate any information you could provide!

In the East End, Dynamo Soccer seems to be very popular and I've only heard good things about it: http://www.pittsburghdynamo.org/home.php

As for ballet, I don't know. Chatham U. (in Squirrel Hill) used to have ballet classes for kids on campus, and I liked them because you only had to buy a costume every other year, and they didn't hit you up for money all the time. But when I quickly looked at their website just now, I saw there is some affiliation with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and that suggests a considerably more serious attitude toward ballet than my daughter ever had. Could be what you're looking for though.

Check out the Jewish Community Center:

No religious affiliation is required, and this is one heck of a community center. There is an outdoor pool in Monroeville which is part of the membership, and a beautiful indoor pool in the Squirrel Hill facility. There are lots of classes for kids, including, at least when my daughter was there for preschool, ballet and other dance classes.

Welcome to Mr. Rogers' neighborhood!

The Pittsburgh area is flooded with dance schools. Some are closer to Squirrel Hill than others and each has its own unique mix of offerings, whether that be a more serious curriculum or something more recreational in nature. At the age of four, your concerns for your daughter shouldn't necessarily be about her professional career, but a warm loving place that will foster a love for dance. You may find it worth your time to look at some of the suburban dance schools.

Otherwise, Bodiography is in your neighborhood. I am not familiar with their children's program, but their dancers are wonderful.

PBT is the obvious choice for the most serious route. They do offer a children's program and I believe that these classes are also offered outside of their main studio space. You may want to contact them to see if they are offering anything in the Squirrel Hill area.

There seems to be a lot of community based dance programs in Squirrel Hill. For your four year old, they may be a good place, but they won't really allow her to grow with time if that becomes an interest.

Good luck finding the right place!

Would be very interested to know what you decided on for dance. We too are moving to Pittsburgh in two weeks and have a four year old that wants to do ballet. Thanks for any info.

The Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company and School is wonderful! Pre school classes are ages 2-5. Read under classes to learn about them. Check out the website:
