Looking for something to do?

My daughter and I will be there for a few days while another daughter attends a camp. We are looking for somethings to do, hiking, a lake where we could spend the day, town to walk around? Also looking for inexpensive hotel within 1/2 hour.

I would highly recommend a visit to nearby Penns Cave, an all-water cavern. There is also a wildlife park.

Bald Eagle State Park is in the area.

Be sure to visit the Penn State Creamery for delicious ice cream!

There is also the Arboretum at Penn State.

If hiking or outdoors activity is your game, then Bald Eagle and Whipple Dam state parks are nearby as is Rothrock State Forest and of course, Mt. Nittany (and the Mt. Nittany Conservancy).

Downtown State College is very walkable with shops and such (much oriented toward the PSU visitor or student) as is the campus. There's a shopping mall just east of town (out Rt 26) as well as some strip mall and movie theater in the same area.

For cheap accommodations, try the Fairfield Inn on Atherton Street north of State College. They always seem to have a good rate when I'm in town (particularly if you're a Happy Valley VIP member).

And of course as FlyEagle mentions, the creamery is not to be missed.

Shaver's Creek is another fun spot, with a nature center and raptor rehabilitation.

We also like to walk from town up to the campus. The student union building, the HUB, has a nice aquarium on the lower level.

The Fairfield Inn is nice (I'll have to check out the Happy Valley VIP!), as is the Hampton Inn at Williamsburg Square. Toftrees is another possibility, especially if you can get a good rate; read the ratings and see what you think. We had a good experience there and especially liked the pool.
