Things to do

I may have the opportunity to take a job in Wilkes Barre, Pa. The area looks nice with a reasonable cost of living. Of some things I like I know there is minor league baseball and hockey, good restaurants, some but minimal broadway theater, and parks.

I'm curious what are the type things a single person can do in the area to regularly keep busy. It can be within a 45 minute radius of Wilkes Barre.

Thank you.

The Yankees' minor league club is off to a good start this season and the ballpark is also nice, at least it was the last time I was up a few years ago when the Red Barons played there. Montage Mountain is also nearby and has lots of big name concerts. If you're into winter sports, you'd be close to lots of great NE PA skiing and snowboarding.

I don't know too much about the theatre options in Wilkes Barre but there are some great parks/recreational oprrotunities in the area:

One of the best state parks in Pennsylvania (Ricketts Glen SP) is about 45 minutes from Wilkes Barre. Great hiking and VERY scenic.

I also like the town of Jim Thorphe (also about 45 minutes away). Pretty town and great recreational opprotunities on/near the Lehigh River.

The Delaware River is only about an hour away (more recreational ops. and scenery).

There are many state parks in the nearby Poconos (within 30-60 minutes away)

Also, Wilkes Barre also has a great grocery store called Wegmans. It is a "destination" for some.

Neighboring Scranton has some interesting things to see (coal mine tour, railroad museum).

There is plenty to do in the 45 minute radius of Wilkes Barre/Scranton area. I dont know what areas you are looking at or planning to relocate too. I think you would perfer the areas sorounding W-B area. That would be the Mountain Top area, Plains, Laflin,Hanover,Ashley,Kingston,Forty Fort,Wyoming and Wilkes Barre Township all within 5-15 minutes of Wilkes-Barre. I would stay away from living in the city of Wilkes-Barre as the city makes the headlines on the news almost everyday now..

There are a number of things to do in and around the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area (Luzerne and Lackwanna counties.)

There a a variety of state and local parks, shopping centers and malls, several community theatres, a good number of museums and historic sites, and a number of special events throughout the year.

If you type in 'things to do in eastern pennsylvania' in a search engine, you'll find a few sites within the top results that list alot. You'll also find some of the things here on Tripadvisor.

Good luck to you!

For a single person moving to the area I would also recommend joining NEPA Power. I know they do "Power Outages" frequently in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. See their website for more info.

If you are interested to meet other people for networking there are also Wilkes-Barre Leadership and Leadership Lackawanna programs.

I live just outside of Wilkes-Barre so if you do decide to move here and are interested to meet some people feel free to PM me.

Hi travelus,

There are so many things to do in this area! I am going to give you a couple of links so that you can do some "looking around." If I were to list everything to do within a 45 minute radius, I would be on here forever! LOL
