Music Scene? Nightlife?

I'm considering relocating to Wilkes-Barre and was wondering if anybody can tell me anything about the local music scene and if there are any good bars, etc. By 'good' I mean has character, no techno music, easy on the karaoke... good old fashioned rock'n'roll preferable.

My husband and I are considering a job offer there and so far, I can't seem to find anything of interest about the area. We will join Glenn Maura country club for our golf obsession, but if you look up the restaurants the selection is standard chain. YUCK! Does anyone out there have anything nice to say about the area other than shopping and Casino's for God's sake? Art world? Galleries...culture... brain stimulation? Anything interesting?

Hi Curious

I've lived in the area my entire life-43 years now. I can't really comment too much about the local bar scene, as I have not been into that in quite a few years. When I was bar-hopping, there were a lot of places that featured good local rock cover bands, but I'm not sure about now. However, I can tell you a few things. First, we have what I consider a pretty good concert scene year round, with 2 indoor venues in Wilkes-Barre, 1 indoor venue in Scranton, and an outdoor pavillion in Scranton. We have AHL hockey, AAA minor league baseball, and a lot of outdoor opportunities. If you investigate a little, you will find a good number of local eateries in addition to the standard chains.

Hope this helps.
